Mapping aps that use Ordnance Survey maps?

I'm on a new piece of ground and I'd like to have a map on my Android phone of the ground. I'd like to be able to -

  • Mark up boundaries.
  • Mark up points of interest - high seats, etc.
  • Mark up areas of interest - vulnerable trees.
  • I'd like to still be able to use my paper Ordnance Survey map to check the details I've captured.
  • I'd like to be able to export the map and share it.

Any recommendations on a good app to get?

Thanks

JCS

I resist the current digital obsession & prefer paper maps so this isn’t of interest to me. As all OS map sets are protected by Crown copyright, wouldn’t the agency that publishes them be your first point of call? There are plenty of formats shown on the official web site…..

Have you looked at the Ordnance Survey app to see if it can do what you want? I have it on my iPhone but I presume they do an Android version. When you buy a paper OS map there is a code which gives you access to download a digital version. There are various levels of access and features you can subscribe to.

I have used google maps to mark up boundaries and high seats etc. Which you can print or share or screen grab.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.ordnancesurvey.osmaps&showAllReviews=true only gets a 3 star rating.

My experience of Ordnance Survey has always been poor.

Bing maps allow you to use OS maps but I do not know if it works on a smart phone. You may have to download the Bing App to get the mapping to work properly. It also gives you a very good distance measuring tool for either straight lines or boundaries and also allows you to measure area.

I use mapserve.co.uk. I don't like to be messing around with a phone, particularly as there's very little signal where we stalk and a lot of the apps want to use the inbuilt phone gps. You can find the link to mapserve on the OS website (it's a partner company). You can pinpoint any area you wish, draw in marches, stiles, whatever you want and then decide on scale, paper size, etc. You get get right up to 1:200 scale if you wish. We usually just stick with A4 size, then laminate the map and it's small enough to go in a pocket.
