Messy Schmidt

Got a dirty reticle on my S&B PMII (see pic). Scope is just over 10 year old but immaculate. Emailed S&B service for a "repair" - started off very positive telling me to ship it over and they'll clean it for free. Seems Klaus from Service Dept has had a change of heart (or a word with his manager) this morning. Told me to send it to them via the original seller (Macleod & son - very good company) citing customs paperwork etc. Seems a bit longwinded to me and hassle all round. Anyone had any recent dealings with S&B? Am I better off getting the scope serviced in the UK? Any advice much appreciated, Bledd

Perhaps as a result of it being just over the 10yr mark, their service page says the following;
"In the first 10 years after buying the scope the service will even be free of charge, provided the claim is based on material defects or faulty workmanship."

I have very recently had a similar little fleck appear on my scope (2yrs old) which has been sent back through the retailer (Opticswarehouse) for servicing.

Hopefully they 'do the right thing' and sort it out for free though, shouldn't really happen anyway (have bits coming loose internally). Be a good result if they sort you out.

Its down to the “B” word again, youy bought it when you were in the EU and now your not, so lots of forms and hassle.
Send it back, clearly labelling it as a warranty repair and keep the receipt.
You’ll likely be charged fourteen ways from Monday when it’s returned, appeal them all, the only charges due are on the cost of the repair, which is zero under warranty.
Theres a lot of companies and businesses just not arsed with the paper work on both sides of the split.

Thanks both. I was originally a bit miffed by the change in tune but after reading your replies, seems he was just being honest. I'll email Macleod and see how the land lies. Failing that, any suggestions of "local" scope repairer/servicer?

Evening Bledd

I have a few bits waiting to go back to Schmidt and bender not to sure what to do re forms bit of a nightmare but will suss it out best to send the scope to us.
Schmidt and bender have gone downhill service wise since they pulled their sales rep and office out of the uk so we have stopped getting in more Schmidt.
This Is a huge shame though as the Schmidt and bender scopes in my opinion are excellent and very robust and with a uk office and bit of marketing could do very well.

I wasn’t aware of the withdrawal from the U.K.

Really bad news

That would be great - thank you. Yes, real shame about them pulling out. Will make me think twice about the next brand of scope I shell out for. There's no question where I'll be buying it though! S&B need to take a leaf out of your book

There are NO scopes in the world that compete with Euro glass.

Such a shame.

Paul Burke is, I believe, the man to go to in the U.K. for scope repairs. Might cost You a few Bob but probably worth avoiding the grief of import/export. Vat, duty, yada yada

My scope has been to paul. Great service and could have been a cheap fix. It was not.

The internal finish of the PM11 degrades and can only be dealt with by Schmidt.

Be prepared for a long wait, the problem I found was not Schmidt and Bender but German customs, took nearly 3 months before my scope was released and eventually reached the factory and that was sent via one of their UK accredited dealers with the correct customs paperwork.
