Moderators coming off ticket

Being the sceptic I am, could the seemingly 'quick' (in government timescales) move to remove moderators from FACs reduce the load on Police Firearms departments sufficiently to allow them to accommodate the increase in admin from shotguns being included on FACs?....

I can see the Labour government doing this to nullify the additional work argument before it even starts. Imagine it: "We've removed workload from the Police by deregulating moderators, so now they have the capacity to deal with Shotguns being on S1 FAC."

Consultation?... Hmmm, just a formality more like!

At least they are not considering, on the grounds of H&S, insisting that every moderator should be linked to a specific rifle - as distinct from chambering - c/o Proofing.

Don't get excited. The amendment gets withdrawn a few speeches later.
Standard procedure for an opposition tabled amendment. If the government doesn't come back with their own amendment to the same end then the original amendment could be re-tabled, and given it was already supported by Lib dem and tory parties it could win a vote in the Lords, which would be embarrassing for the government. There's a strong chance that this will get done in this bill from my understanding of parliamentary procedure - which I admit is fairly elemental!

2025 stats are that 200k mods are in circulation in England and Wales, as opposed to 1.3 million S2 shotguns. Balancing workload argument doesn't even get off the ground!

Thanks for that info, I wasn't aware. But when has the actual facts and figures got in the way of a politician arguing black is white...? Unfortunately I think they will still try to argue the case that they have freed up capacity.

Shotgun 🤔 Surely firearm……
No, 'shotgun' is correct.
In section 4 it is proposed to remove the striked out bit:
“shot gun” has the meaning assigned to it by section 1(3)(a) of this Act and, in sections 3(1) and 45(2) of this Act and in the definition of “firearms dealer”, includes any component part of a shot gun and any accessory to a shot gun designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the gun;

Removing the whole of section (1)(d) removes them from the definition of 'firearm':
57(1)(d)an accessory to a lethal barrelled weapon or a prohibited weapon where the accessory is designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the weapon

I suspect it will be packaged as part of the simplifying firearms licensing legislation.

Removing sound moderators from licensing.

Harmonising Section 1&2 to make it easier for everyone with a single category for licensed guns.

Yes merged S1 and s2.

No chance of things getting easier in practical terms.

Probably have to store your guns at the RFD and ask for permission from the feo to take it out.
