Muntjac velvet strange colour

This little buck came out yesterday evening - from an unexpected direction- so didn't get a chance for a look through the binos.
Through the 'scope I could see bright orange/pink spots on both sides of his head, so assumed he'd just cast his antlers. You can see one in the photo.
When I went to retrieve the carcase he was in velvet, 2cm long, normal colour, no sign of pinky orange.
The colour I saw before I shot him- looking at the photo -is immediately behind the pedicles. Was it blood flowing under the velvet and glowing? I've never seen it before on any species of deer.Screenshot 2024-07-13 at 07.41.22 (1).jpeg

BUMP.
I am really curious about the 2 orange spots. I've shown the video to a few friends and they have never seen anything like it.
Could it be scent glands? Any thoughts or discussion would be great.
