My intro...

I am Douglas and I am in Oklahoma. I hunt.

I stumbled across this board yesterday when researching, I am looking at the history the .303.

I found this thread What's this cartridge? I know, old thread, but I know what this cartridge is.

Lurking around this board I see lots of interesting stuff. My focus these past few years has been the Martini rifle and it's many variations, including and especially the sporting versions. I have hunted Africa, Canada and the US with a Martini.

I am currently working with a pair of .303 Martini's.

First a Holloway & Naughton, possibly built on a Bonehill sporting Martini action-or sourced from the supplier that Bonehill used to build their full size sporting rifles. This one is a .303 British. I could see rifling in the bore. When I slugged the bore no rifling showed on the slug. When I measured the slug no consistent measurement was found. The gun shot more like a shotgun than a rifle. I had the barrel relined and chambered back to .303 British. I still have a lot of work to do on this rifle. It has a very heavy trigger pull and binding rim in the chamber/extractor.

The second gun is even more interesting. It is a commercial sporter made on an action identical to the action Greener used to make their S1 Sporting Martini. Instead saying Greener on the banner it says Rawbone. Barrel says Made for Rawbone, Cape Town. I do know Rawbone worked for Greener before going off to South Africa and later Canada. This gun is what brought me to this board. It is marked "for .303 Ammunition" Firing a .303 British resulted in the heads of the cartridge rupturing from excessive pressure. Examination of my bore by slugging gave me a groove dimension of .304 in a Metford bore. .303 British bullet of course being .311 diameter and giving due cause for the ruptured case heads. This is gun marked for riflelite powder and proofs seem indicate this gun was made in the 1890's.

I have acquired some 180 grain SP .304 diameter bullets and no longer have excessive pressure . This guns seems to want to shoot better than my 74 year old body will allow. I took it to the Deer Stand with me last season, but no proper deer showed up. I will take it again this season. I am also considering taking it in 2023 to South Africa for medium plains game. It just seems the right thing to do. Hawk Bullets here in the US can supply me with 215 grain jacketed soft point bullets and I think i am going build a load for those for hunting. I suspect that is the bullet intended for this gun.

But like I said, I found this board doing research and I know what this cartridge is, and that is what brought me here originally.
