Never shot a deer. I've always been into foxes, rabbit and general pest control. I've recently purchased a tikka T3ace in 308 flavour. 1 for range days and 2 for deer. I need to get practice with it first. Up to now I've been using my Tikka T3 for the foxes,22 WMR,17HMR and airguns (sub 12 and FAC) for other small game and quarry. I also shoot practical mini rifle and LBP for a club. Shotguns, I am crap with. Shooting is more than a hobby for me. It is a release from ex military.

There is no real difference is shooting deer to foxes with muntjac being a perfect example, they have a good routine (like foxes)
can be shot all year around (like foxes) also will come to a call (like foxes)
The back stops/safety applies to all shooting just the seasons (not for male deer) in Scotland will be the only thing.

If you are shooting foxes on a regular basis just swap it for deer with the right round.

I think my main issue is that I don't know a lot about deer, seasons or gralloching. I have all the necessary information for the deer management course, but never had the time to study it or book it. I don't even know if it would be worth it for me. I know about shot placement and when it is safe or not to take the shot. Our club chairman is a shooting instructor, and also ex military. He has offered to show me. Again I just haven't had the time. Hopefully now that I am now semi retire, that should change.

The seasons are listed and if you have shot enough rabbits and cleaned them out there is not much different on the inside as they both eat plant matter and poo out black/brown pellets, deer have a nodes (filters indictors close enough term) both can have liver fluke and suffer with ticks also other aliments!
Just treat them like anything going into the food chain, don't cut anything that can leak or spill!
Just go slow.
The muntjac I shot last night was as poor as a rook it went straight on the farm fire and will be ash by know, it had not recovered from a very large (i would say hit by a car) wound. Did it a favour.
