Number of bought or shot.

A question or two for you.
Could an issuing force refuse a renewal on the grounds that the applicant hasn't bought or shot enough number of rounds, so therefore hasn't a good enough reason for the calibre in question?

What

In your opinion what would be a satisfactory number per annum?

Its not up to me to determine - but certainly if someone is not using the rounds then where is the justification
I know of several people who have lost rifles for lack of use - or at least that why they say they lost them

The guide I have seen not statutory before anyone says it……. But the guide I have seen says attend your club three times a year for everything with target conditions. For anything vermin conditioned supppse it’s just show you have tried to get out and not shot or have shot.

If you have asked for 2000 of something and only shot 100 then I can see them reducing your ammo holding as you just don’t need to be holding that many.

I know a chap who had his 17HMR questioned as he never bought a single round for it during the certificate lifespan. Not pulled but certainly thoroughly grilled over usage.

In 1984 I fired one shot.

And how many in the other 4 years of the 5 year term of that certificate?
You could shoot none for 2 years, then a few shots the next year, and none again for the next 2 years. And that would be fine, if it was consistent with the "good reason" for which you were granted the certificate.

Thank all for your replies. As jall55 said I also have heard about people loosing their licence / calibre due to inactivity and it was this that got me thinking about how many is enough and what is, if there is any, a justifiable amount?

For Gun clubs they seem to have settled on 3x per year as reasonable locally and had a serious conversation with a member who had not made that (but in the end renewed it)

I have a friend who has not taken a shot in 4 years but sailed renewal (new baby, move of house and guns stored elsewhere for a while etc)

Guess it's a bit variable. Plus the police do have the issue that it is quite a step to refuse to renew a licence of someone who has not done anything wrong and has a decent story about why they currently shoot very little

I suspect that if you buy or load a box of ammunition in each 5 year period it would not be an issue. In fact an FEO I once spoke to when I acted as a referee intimated that. Apparently the gentleman I was a referee for was considered a prolific user of ammunition and shot around 100 rounds per year. Easiest way to prove you have been out is to take a date stamped photo of your rifle when you are out stalking

Well if you reload all your calibres there might be no entry of ammo sales on your certificate. None on mine except 22lr.
However I have records for all the ammo I have reloaded and lots of empty bullet boxs. Also a jar of spent primers.

Same here, only .22 and .17hmr, I don't keep spent primers as I can show proof of purchase for reloading consumables

I was specifically asked on my last renewal which of my rifles, if any, I had NOT purchased ammunition for in the last 12 months. Purchased for them all of course, but you see where they were going with it.

Just tell ‘em you load your own…

It appears this is a tactic they will be trying more and more as the years roll on. This is exactly the sort of thing the shooting orgs should unite on and have a massive pushback, form a fighting fund to challenge all this nonsense.

The FEO who came out to me a few years ago couldn't believe his bad luck... he started to question why I never had ammo purchases on my ticket since it had been issued, I get the impression he was ready to tell me the bad news that I didn't have good reason.. I told him I had started to reload straight away... his reply.."aah.. we haven't any record of you being a "reloader" please keep records of consumables purchased.
It's all a joke really, easiest thing in the world to purchase ammo or consumables even if you don't use them.
