Hello,

From Hampshire and interested in obsolete calibre rifles. Making brass and putting back into life - obviously on FAC!
Martini Henry 577/450
Vetterli 10.4x38 .41 swiss
.32/40
.297-250
Snider .577
.44 Evans

Plus other old interesting rifles like Ross M10-MKIII & Winchester 71 .348.

Welcome. Will be interested to learn more about what sounds like a fascinating passion.
Kind regards,
Carl

Your Ross M10 .303, 297-250 Rook rifle, l do have a .380 Snider Rook Rifle, I’m sure l have a 577/450 case somewhere, very interesting reloading for them, well done you.

I find the process of research then working to make the brass a really rewarding process. Trying to get reloading data for an obscure cartridge. Then finally firing it for the first time. Such great fun.
I am quite into lever action rifles and obsolete all started with 32/40. Quite easy to make ammo for. When a friend gave me a Winchester 71 in .348 (not obsolete) I struggled to get the brass as it seems everybody was using it to make other cartridges - keep your hands off my .348 brass - which is where I bumped into Vetterli rifles - actually 8mm Lebel is way better donor cartridge.
There are so many interesting rifles out there. My Evans Repeating Rifle - 44 Evans. Is a really interesting one always gets attention it has a Archimedean-screw magazine in the stock and holds 28 rounds!
Martini Henry 577/450 is easy enough to make but annealing is key to that cartridge.

Sorry to hijack your intro, but how do you make your .577/.450 MH cases?

I have a rifle from 2nd Warwickshire Reg at Rorke's Drift (aren't they all!) on display (s58) by the fireplace and I might make up some dummy rounds to show next to it.

I was planning on buying some from Kranks but making 'em would be more fun.

Kind regards,

Carl

I use 28g Magtec brass anneal, neck down and trim. The MH dies are the bigger ones and expensive.

Perfect! Thank you. I have some dies and will give it a go. They look lovely with their neat little paper patches, eh?
Kind regards,
Carl

Here are some Martini Henry. Nice BIG round that goes off with a satisfying bloody big bang!!!

I have included one that creased. This happens if the neck has slight damage from donor case, also if not annealed properly. Sometimes if it goes and you spot quick enough you can trim down the damage and use case to make a Snider .577 case. But as you can see you are neck brass down a long way. Oh, don't go mad with loads of lube!

More home made brass porn! .297-250 Rook made from 22 Hornet brass. They are buggers to make as so small.
