I used to deal in taxidermy and packing birds to avoid damage in transit was a nightmare. I'd think twice about offering postage if I were you.
I know what you mean, the best way I have found is to cable tie the wooden mount to the bottom of the box then fill the gaps with polystyrene or the air filled bags.

Yes, that's the way, we used to carefully clingfilm the birds, duct tape the base to the bottom of the box, then fill with soft polystyrene beads, usually it was enough.
