I'm planning my first trip to Africa to hunt plains game in 2018. Are there any books available which give a description of the quarry species, recommended shot placement etc? I have searched for The Perfect Shot online, but copies seem to be over £100.

Take a look at The Shakari Connection, it lists many books of interest and you may well find something there. The website is also a mine of info on planning your Safari.

African Hunter publish "Shot Placement" a Pocket Field Guide. Can be ordered on line from

By and large, your aiming point on African Plainsgame is much the same as for deer - just behind the front leg and one third to halfway up the body.

There is a mini edition in paperback which you can get for about £20 and it is probably the book that fits your criteria best.

+1 I found it very good. But really all you need to remember is that with African plains game their vitals are further forward and a little lower than any UK deer.
Good luck with your 1st trip.............I say 1st because you will go back;)

download shot placement photos from the internet to your mobile gallery area, works better than the booklet, especially if you want to zoom in...

Good advice there from PeteL. Steve Robinson (Shakari) who is now retired and living in Portugal, regularly posts on Accurate Reloading.com,an excellent form for information on African hunting.
Closer to home our host Malcolm and other experienced forum members, I am sure would help with first hand advice...

Only and best book to buy is The perfect shot(african animals). Shows all vitals and gives all details on any african species you can hunt.

The Perfect Shot is the perfect book.
The second updated version is available on Amazon for £50.
I'm sure you can find it cheaper if you look around.

Update: It's on eBay for £35 new.
