properly waterproof well made Boots .??

Morning all,

Looking for some recommendations on some well made waterproof boots. I’ve read a lot on here about certain brands claiming to be and are defiantly not waterproof.

Any input greatly appreciated.

A good pair of wellingtons if simply waterproof is what you are looking for.

However if you are wanting an out and out boot then I can say from my own experience that the Lowa Hunter GTX Extreme to this day have never let me down or let water in and have had them for 5 years.

There are a lot of good waterproof boots out there. IMO the only trade off is as soon as water gets in or over the top and THIS WILL HAPPEN sooner or later. Once the water is in it stays in, you will have wet feet and they can take forever to dry out. GTX boots are also generally heavier than non GTX lined boots.

Recently I have been using some Altberg Defender (non GTX lined) paired with some Sealskinz Waterproof Socks and I think I prefer this combination. Feet stay warm if water gets in and touch wood the socks haven’t let up either can pick Altberg Defenders up cheap too

Meindle dovre pro . Excellent waterproof and warm ...had mine 4 years and still good as new. Just a little wash and treatment with Meindle wax every now and then ....

I’ve always gone with Glockners and a.n.other make as a second pair and I’ve always been disappointed with the second pair.

Thinking about trying a pair of the Lowa Tibet Hi this time because I don’t want too much insulation.

Currently have Dedito as a second pair and they have always given me damp feet and they stink which isn’t a problem with meindls - they are comfortable but after every use they have to go on the boot drier.

Any GoreTex lined leather boot will keep water out. In time seams fail as the boot wears and some will leak. I’ve just chucked a pair of AKU’s that started to leak (they were 12 years old) and a pair of Matterhorns issued in the mid 90’s that literally wore out but were still waterproof.

The Altberg/Sealskinz option isn’t a bad way to go in my view.

At the moment, I have three pairs of cheapie Haix boots that I wear every third day. I rub in the Leder Gris before putting them on each time. After about 4 months, they are starting to crease where I would expect them to crack. How often are the boots that last 4-5 years being worn?

Bought a pair of Iturri ECW boots back in the summer & have to say that they are probably the best boots I've ever had. Come in standard & wide fittings & can be found on a well known online auction site for very good money in used & new condition

In fact have been out in them this morning - another fallow doe in the larder

Get a decent pair of gaiters. Most water gets into boots from

A) Sweat from your feet

B) from wet trousers then wicking down your socks

You can only manage sweating by controlling your temperature and having a dry pair of socks in your pack.

As for waterproof boots, look for ones made from a single piece of leather for the whole upper. The fewer joins the better. I don’t think Goretex linings are much use, abd certainly not once slightly worn. They get clogged and then your feet may as well be in a plastic bag. I much prefer straight leather as it allows more breathing.

Any of the good brands produce good strong boots. Focus on fit to your foot first and foremost. Water ingress is then a matter of management.

And if you are spending your day in standing water / bogs decent wellies are the way to go.

Another user of the Lowa Hunter Extremes. Over 5years old and still going strong. Never leaked and no issues. Will not hesitate to buy another pair when these are done.

I think one of the better changes to modern leather boots has been the high seal that you get on Altbergs and similar boots. Stops the water getting into the stitching.

they used to be around 70-80 £ which was xcellent for what you got but I went to purchase a pair recently and they are all around 120-140£ .. and there scarce . There still cheapish at that price for the quality but I like a bargain .

About £80 is what I paid. It was a few years ago after I had my leg and ankle plated and screwed back together, and was told to wear boots all the time. They have been hanging around until the Altbergs finally cracked up.
Sounds like you can still buy 3-4 pairs for the price of one 'premier' pair.
