This little gem appeared recently on the PSNI website..
“From Thursday 4th September the way in which you submit your firearms applications will be changing. You will click on a link on the Firearms website which will take you to the PSNI Portal system. From there you will need to register to create a login and password for your personal account”.
A further requirement for applicants to use IT in the licensing process, presumably designed “to improve efficiency and drive down costs”.
The question for me is obvious - what if you are not IT savvy or don’t have a PC or even access to the web - or all three? Ha says you - sure everyone has this nowadays - except they don’t!
So what are you to do if you just happen to be one of the one in three 65+ year olds with an existing FAC or gosh - desire to acquire/vary it?
From what I am given to understand it appears that you need to grab a passing spotty herbert who can do all this for you or as per PSNI advice use the local library computer and presumably the local librarian - all guaranteed to enhance your firearms security.
And speaking of said security this happens to be the same outfit which made a bit of a whoopsie all of their own…
“PSNI staff details were published in error in August 2023 as a result of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, which exposed the personal information of its entire workforce to the public. The data included surnames and initials and was hidden in a "hidden" tab on a spreadsheet. This led to a significant data breach with serious consequences for staff safety and has resulted in the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) proposing a £750,000 fine for the PSNI.“.
You couldn’t make it up!
