Re barrel

Could anyone advise to the cost of rebarreling either a howa 1500 or a savage axis? I'm debating doing some longer range target shooting and fancy something a bit longer, or in the savage's case a heavier profile and longer. Not looking to spend silly money on a barrel though lol. Thanks

Depends who does the work and what barrel you decide on.
All in it would likely be £650 - 1200

A barrel sourced from Lothar or Sassen would likely cost 260 shipped to the gunsmith

Total cost including proof would be about 650 for non fluted, threaded for mod and thread protector

Other barrel makes, fluting, coating all add extra cost

How much extra would it be for a bartlein ?

For them prices it seems easier to buy another rifle lol, didnt realise it would be quite that much to be fair. I am not knocking anyones work in any way shape or form but didnt expect it. What would the benefits of the likes of a sassen barrel over factory?

Precision.

Profile you want. Length you want. Calibre you want rather than factory offerings. Chamber cut for your preferred coal/bullet/bullet weights. Fluting you want etc etc.

It is most valuable when it is something you cannot buy factory.

I put a 6mm barrel on a rifle last year chambered specifically for the 107gr SMK. 28" so more steam, big target pipe, fast twist. Not going to get that from Sportsman's.

Spoke to the same smith about a longer #5 profile for my Howa 308, he said buy another rifle. He got me the Bergara Ridge (270) with a 24" #5 which did the job.

So depends, if you can buy another rifle that does the job for the same money (debatable - another scope, mod rings etc) great it will not shoot as well as a better barrel but does it matter? If precision, downrange velocity, profile, twist and the chamber specifics matter then you are into new barrel territory.

It probably wont shoot any better than a Tikka or a Remington out of the box.
That's not the problem I have, it shoots factory sub moa standard, with reloads its sub half moa easily. And that goes both for the savage and the howa. Me and scoby270 off here were plinking at a 3 odd inch gong and shooting clay targets at over 300 yards last week. I'd have thought it would be useful when extending ranges and trying to get the most from the calibre with velocity and getting a twist rate for heavier bullets

Hello Hendrix, when I answered, I only had your first OP for referral.....

If this has changed there are plenty of options out there, some even posted here. Depends on how far your 'extended ranges' are, perhaps its best to talk to a proven gunsmith, good luck. john
