I'm wondering if there is any specific grain sealer I should be using?

Yes and it depends on the finish your applying the type you need.

I use rustins natural cheap on toolshed etc

it takes stain well, appears very hard when it has gone off and is easy to apply
you don't have to get a high gloss finish, i prefer someway between matt and gloss

Any shellac based will do I prefer spirit ab
and shellac based like Rustins or Liberon
