Opinions.. what trophy is this? My girlfriends grandfather wandered many mountains and found this beautiful piece on one, but where did it originate from?

A young red in my opinion. So likely picked up in Scotland at a guess.
 
He definately did not "pick that up" on a mountain, deer shed their antlers but without leaving them attached to the skull, if he wasnt a stalker he prob bought this in a second hand shop , and yes sure its a young Red

Or he found the skull/carcass on the hill in which case it is still likely he picked the whole thing.

Gutted for you sir, he did pick it up. A straight on wanderer and lover of the Scottish mountains not into his hunting found it on one of his climbs. So yes he certainly most did just “pick that up.”
