Recommendations for a lightweight, summer waterproof upper outer layer.

I really rate Keela, they have been making kit for military/police/ambo etc for years but not that well known on the civvy net.

but for value, my wife has just ordered this smock.... its not waterproof as it comes, but with wax added or diver dates kit should be good for summer wear, silent and a good price. we have had kit from the company before. I am waiting for hers to arrive to decide wether to get one myself... will update

On the topic of woolen clothing, I'm a massive fan of Varusteleka's Särmä product line and their merino wool clothing in general. I have two hoodies, five or six t-shirts that I wear pretty much every day, outdoor woolshell jacket and trousers, and my only underwear are their merino boxer shorts. They're a Finnish brand, and a lot of their products are made in Europe (Lithuania, Estonia etc). Their product pages are generally a good laugh and they don't take themselves too seriously. Anyway, in short, they get a lot of my clothing budget.

I think you'll be pleased with it. I don't own that anorak specifically, but I've never been unhappy with a piece of their kit.

Plus one for Keela......but only when it's cool/cold. I tend to sweat buckets when hill walking in my Keela Munro and even worse in warm weather, even with ventilation zips open.
I like my Harkila Stornoway smock for warmer days, but I still find it's a bit boil-in-the-bag after a long stalk/drag.
I've yet to find a quiet waterproof that keeps you dry and well ventilated when it's raining despite what the manufacturers claim.

I bought some Keela salopettes and used them on a winter skills course in Scotland. I was sweating buckets in them and sold them shortly after.

and they are on "sale' prices at the moment! with a 20% reduction!

Also on e of the things I like is that they are completely closing down all of their Chinese production and moving it back to European locations!

I quite like the look of this, with the pit zips etc. but can’t figure out the sizes.

Don't. I liked the look of them too, at the price. I really don't like mine. The main zip is horrendous and the jacket is heavy.

Mine is 120L. I'm normally 2XL and it's too big. I'll send it to anyone free of charge, if they cover the cost of postage from Austria :D

I use a Musto Fenwick or Harkilka Orton both pack away in their own pocket when not needed and light and waterproof. Also good as a wind proof layer when sat in a windy high seat at the sun drops away in spring

@nic531 Has your wife’s smock arrived yet?

I noticed that Varusteleka were offering further discounts on their Clearance items which brought these smocks down to around €52 (a bit more if postage factored in), so I bought two - one for my wife and myself! At that price point it seems like a steal, but I’m also interested in your first impressions.

I was that impressed that I bought one!

there was another code for 20% off but just checked and it ran out yesterday BURN24. may be worth doing a check online and seeing if they have any other deals... just checked on https://www.wethrift.com/varusteleka... gave a couple of codes that may work inc one for 33% off

BURN24 was the one I used. Ran out yesterday. Should have posted here sooner! Received it on their mailing list.

My smocks haven’t arrived yet but I only ordered on Monday.

I used to really rate paramo but it’s not made for any stick ie crashing through hedges orgetting caught up on anything …”.fragile “

My previous post on the subject of Paramo and why we should avoid them:

Paramo support the World Land Trust who have Chris Packham as a patron:

www.worldlandtrust.org

Chris Packham

Chris Packham - charismatic television presenter, wildlife photographer, author and natural history expert - a patron of World Land Trust from 2013.

The World Land Trust use their cash to purchase areas of land that they, and Chris I presume, deem as ecologically important.

Nikwax/Paramo are also business "supporters" or the RSPB, or at least they were:

Error 404

My suggestion is that you get yourself a mil surplus British Windproof Smock as they are perfect for most outdoor activities and are extremely flexible in use. If you want to send Packham your money then you can just post him a cheque.

Musto Packable fenland

Having tried most shooting waterproofs (excluding Purdey) Musto is the only brand I’d buy again
