Stalking the open ( very ) flow country near Westerdale, Caithness

£160 per day or £200 per day 2 rifles sharing outing

We have had the pleasure ( albeit usually a rather soggy pleasure ) of stalking this ground on behalf of the owner for a good many years. The Flow Country is quite unique in itself and as a stalking challenge. The picture below will perhaps give you a flavour -

This ground is open with a capital 'O'. Hinds are present in good number, but please be clear that this ground will have little appeal for those who judge stalking by volume! Approaches will require great care and good tactics - and not least lots of crawling. It's the most challenging of stalking and may not be to everyone's taste. Though no requirement to be hyper fit.

There is no restriction on the number of animals you may shoot - other than that imposed by the terrain and reasonable allowance for retrieval of the beast; but this is about the stalk, not pack 'em and stack 'em.

Approved Witness ( s ) are available at no additional charge and many people have been with us in the past specifically to complete their level 2.

Caithness is a long haul North, but the challenge is well worth the trip - it really is something very different. 'If you can stalk here, you can stalk anywhere' and ' I've no dry clothes left' are the top visitor comments ;)

Jayb - 'innocent' :-D good choice of word. Those wise to the area will appreciate the two photographers that paused in one place long enough to take a picture at 1/500 of a second had to sacrifice themselves. Luckily the cameras were fitted with flotation bags and were recovered by hovercraft afterwards...

Bogtrotter - I don't use the word lightly - but for me personally it's a magical place. Of course now you all now know the reason why John is so wrinkly! ;) It's only my regime of Lotil and Ulay that keeps me so baby faced....

This looks right up my street, unfortunately we have booked this seasons stalking trip this year all the best

Hi,
I have just had three days out on this ground and had an absolute blast.

There were plenty deer to be seen and all were stalk able using the ground contours that are not so apparent until up close - the photo does not do it justice. I think my longest crawl would have been about 200m and that got me inside 150m of the deer - no long shots were required which is often initial reaction on such featureless ground.

In addition to deer there was plenty bird life as well, some -passing through as they migrate south for the winter.

Am I right in thinking that Moray Outfitting can run Level 1 courses up there?

Hi there,
my friend and I have just returned from a days stalking here. Had a brilliant time and believe it or not the weather was great. John Allan who took us out was on the ball and I can highly recommend him to anyone wishing to go. One word of warning though is be prepared to "belly it" or LOL swim during the stalk. We had an approx 200 yrd crawl in and at time's I thought I'd joined the marines. Great value and as far as we're concerened we'll be back for sure

Pleased you had a good day - it's great when John's medication really kicks in ;).

Appreciate I'm biased, but its a fantastic piece of ground and I personally love the place - even lugging the Argo up Berridale Braes to get there!
