Reloading .270 Winchester

Nope. Just standard, mate. Do you have the Lee manual? That's the one I load to. 54 grains is actually below the minimum start load, so if I don't keep my brass soft I tend to get sooting on the case necks as the obduration isn't optimal (I'm guessing)

I’ve got the Lyman one, and it’s not the most advanced in 270 loading by the looks of things😂

In my 22.5" Tikka T3 -

150gr Sierra Gamekings with 60gr Viht N165
and Federal 215 primers gives me about 2850fps.

110gr Barnes TSX with 63gr Viht N160, CCI200 Primers = about 3300 fps

Bet they’re lethal enough! The 110 grain used for smaller deer or foxes? And the 150’s the bigger deer?

I used to use the 150's for Roe. Perfect for all deer actually as they don't wreck carcasses.

I then decided that I didn't want lead in my venison so I swapped to copper bullets. I tested the Barnes 110gr and they're very accurate but haven't shot deer with them. I use S.African GS Custom 110gr copper bullets @3450fps for deer now. They're very effective on any UK deer.

Has the lead ban come into deer stalking now? Or it that a personal choice to swap over to non lead?
How much of an advantage do the non lead bullets with lower weight and more speed compare against heavier lead bullets? Cheers

Lead free is a personal choice as I consume most venison that I shoot and also give it away or sell it. Using good lead free bullets is every bit as effective as conventional bullets. I've heard that Barnes 110 TTSX and Fox 130gr work well if you're looking to go in that direction.

It's also kinder to birds to not have lead fragments in the gralloch.

The cost of lead free bullets doesn't come into the equation, as I spend a lot of money on diesel for stalking etc. I get my bullets cheaply in bulk when I visit S.Africa.

I'm not as concerned about using lead shot for wingshooting, as it's harder and doesn't fragment.

Slower powders work better so in Viht a minimum of H160 and in the now banned Hodgdon a minimum of H4831. Reloader 22 would also be a good "go to" powder.

Personally for the UK the .270 WCF is probably better with a 140 grain or 150 grain bullet at about a steady 2,750 fps to 2,850 fps. Hornady do their Interlock in 140 and 150 grain and Speer their Hot Cor in 150 grain. I am sure that Sierra will do something similar.

Oh...just a fad or fetish of mine...I prefer flat base bullets if there is a choice over boat-tail bullets. For even though boat-tail are easier to insert into the case mouth flat base bullets if correctly handled when placing them in the case mouth go in easily enough.

Lastly best accuracy is often in loads that aren't crimped.
I used to load 140 grain bullets to those specs, really nice to shoot, low recoil and muzzle blast, very accurate and killed well.
I think we may have reinvented the 7x57.😜

I hate threads like this, everyone seems to be around 2800fps,,,,,,,ummm mine are almost all over 3000 , 130gn go at 3120 with a stout measure of n165 ! 150meter zero, and I have never had a runner (although I have had to bin the odd shoulder/ front rib section) whoops !

Factory rounds are only around 3060. Is there a reason you want to push yours faster? Not having a go at all, just genuinely interested as I find I get superb results with 54 grains of H4831 with a similar bullet to the one you use

Yes there is half reason, i occasionally take it to the range, and that was the most accurate load I worked up to. Although only about a inch or so smaller groups, noticeable at about 300. And writing that i feel like a bit of a ****, as i my longest every shot was just over 260 meters ! I have taken foxes that were a little further ( probably) and I am just one of those sad gits that target shoot a bit and try to get the best out of all my rifles.

I load mine to about 2800fps with a 130 grain Sierra Gameking. It kills everything from roe, red, whitetail in the states, and raccoon with tame recoil and muzzle flip! It's also good enough to kill a 4" clay pigeon at 280 yards with no holdover. I'm going to run out of H4831 at some point, and I just hope I can replicate this performance!

absolutely perfect 👌

150 GK R22 in mine ( Browning Abolt , I do another for a pal ( rem 700 ) again 150 gk for N165 56gr both are spot on . I tried n160 in mine but the R22 was far better . also mine did't like the 130 bullets .

My 130 gr Hornady spire points chronograph at 3000 fps. I have used this load for over 25 years and have never had issues with carcase damage. The .270 was designed to be a flat shooting non belted magnum. Enjoy its superb performance!!!

I'm going to load up some Speer 100gr using Reloder 19 & Viht N140 for comparison when the opportunity is once more available.
Got Re22 N160 & N165 to test with 130/140/150 gr heads pills bullets. :stir:

I miss H4831SC...

I'm still loading it, 58 grains C 140 grain Accubonds, Last test shoot in the quarry a week ago, produced some pretty tight groupings. The last box just landed with postie. Another testament to Jager SA's work for me.:british:
