Remington 221 fireball

How many of these are getting used in the hunting field in UK?

Ok I don't have one, but have a 20vartarg based on the fireball brass. I think it would be a handy fox cartridge compared to the hornet.

I used a CZ American 221 fireball for a fair few seasons. Shot everything with it. Most accurate gun I have ever used.
If i recall correctly you won't get much more than 18g of powder in the case.
Remington brass at the time was very scarce and at times I struggled to source it.
But great calibre to use with 40g vmax and any other 50g bullet you can get your hands on.
Remington brass can be a bit delicate though.👍

Very easy to form 221 Fb cases from .223 brass.

Ps. Super efficient cartridge. 🙂

We're like long lost brothers that have walked the same path Kenbro. I like you even though I don't know you.
Lilgun power was all that I used too. The day I collected that new 221 from a very well known riflesmith he assured me that I'd be happy with it.
The action was as smooth as silk to work just like an expensive Sauer.
So what did I do with it?
I just damn right abused it, never cleaned it and foolishly shoved compressed loads through it.
Killed loads of stuff with it though.
It was only through a change of circumstances that made me part with it.
I still have just one wee fireball case that i kept back just as a token of rememberance of that calibre.
That Remington brass didn't like the compressed loads 😉20250512_164729.webp

Hi Sheamus,
I wonder if that’s the same rifle I bought used and then sold back to the gent I bought it from?
Definitely thin on the ground.
I’ve got a slot waiting for when a push feed one, when one shows it face. 👍🙂

It was an American guy that was working over here that brought the Fireball off me.
Said he was taking it back home to USA for his father.
Don't know if he did or if he sold it on. It was screw cut to take half inch UNF moderator.

The 221 Fireball is such a underrated round, got my first one built at Rosseyth in 1996 it was to my own specifications.
1 in 9 twist and long throat to use the new Hornady A-Max which I had brought back from the states.Super accurate and cheap to run it was my go to rifle for everything. Fox, Rabbit and everything corvid, firing over a hundred rounds a week. It lasted five years and when accuracy fell away the barrel was simply rechamberd in 222 Magnum. Currant 221 built on a Wichita single shot bench rest action.

I don't, but this might surprise you (or horrify you!) a guy i hunted with in Montana (a guy from seeley lake MT) used one on Elk, and it worked!
Buy I was happier with my 30-06

That Witchita actioned rifle must be aging now.
Didn’t they stop producing actions years ago?
Ken.
