My brother is after a new rifle left hand in 7-08 is thinking of a remington possibly a sps the all black one he has a 700 in 22-250 thats about twenty five years old are they still worth buying or would he be better off with something else

The older Rem700 VS in the HS Precision stock are decent. The newer sps are poor. In 7-08 I'd look for a tikka. It'll be similar money. I have a Rem VS and a couple of Tikkas, a Sako, Browning etc. The Rem VS is by far the most accurate of all of my rifles. I am also a leftie.

I’ve a rem SPS being fixed at the moment. A definite Friday afternoon build. Not impressed.
Rem VSSF is mid 90s build and in a different league build-wise.
I’d be tempted to say tikka if a new rifle. Bergara are said to be properly built remmys so that could be another new option?

Rem 700’s are not bad rifles and many really good rifles have been built on them. Remington as a company has had its challenges and been through several iterations.

There is a new Remington with new versions of the Rem 700 being launched. I have seen reviews from the US and the new ones look to already include most of mods that most want to make.

The Bergara B14 is a good rifle and mimic the 700 in critical dimensions so accessories for 700 can be used.

As to calibre and left handedness, 7mm 08 will be a challenge unless you are ordering new from factory, getting a switch barrel or have an existing rifle rebarreled.

If you want off the shelf in left hand in the UK think 223, 243, 6.5 CM, 308 and occasional 270.

The catalogues and websites may well say different but you are dealing with UK importers etc. They only import what they can shift easily. Left hand rifles have a much smaller market.

I shoot left handed and left handed rifles are few and far between.

He has been offered a 595 with a shot out barel he already has a 22-250 rem 700 over twenty years old and still good a tikka 695 in 6.5x55 is looking at something synthetic t3 is favorite or sako but thats double the money

Get a Tikka, the quality of new Remingtons has fallen off a cliff, one of the many reasons they went bust.

The new company (Rem Arms) does not perform warranty work on the old rifles, even if bought 'new'.

I was led to believe Remington declared themselves bankrupt as they were being sued by the anti gun lobby as one of there guns was used in a school shooting, and the defence would cost more than the business was worth.
For the price they are a good gun, compared to the overpriced T3x with its one size fits all 🤐

1980's- late 90's/early 2000's Remingtons were good.

I have a read of the New Remington 700. They come standard fit with a Timney Trigger and general consensus is that they are again built very well. The 223, 243 and 243 are all in a 1 in 8” twist.

I have no clue as to whether any of these new Rem are this side of the puddle yet. I would be pleasantly surprised.

My older LH Rem 700 SPS varmint 223 with the XMark Pro trigger has always been a very good shooter even when it just had there basic plastic stock. It now has a handbuilt walnut stock. Probably no more accurate but nicer.

The Timney is a better trigger, the X Mark Pro is good enough. Well whilst I would prefer a Timney I can’t justify spending £250 on what will be a marginal improvement.
