Requiem for a rabbit

The boys buried the third of four little rabbits that their does have produced. Not a fantastic return but it has been such a great experience for them to this summer: from calculating gestation, arranging the mating, watching them build nests, and then trying to care for the does and their kits in the heat over the last 7 days. Understanding that nature takes its course. Obviously they shoot and eat pest wild rabbits too, I guess many people can’t comprehend the levelheadedness required to be able to hold such seemingly contrasting views of caring and taking. They exhumed her already buried littermates for the disposal, whether symbolic or efficient in this hard sun baked ground I’ll never know 🤣

Excellent way for kids to learn the cycle of life and of course death, well done you and of course the lads.
Sadly there are those who will think that even contemplating doing such a thing is horrendous; their loss…

Chilled water bottles in the hutches are a good idea, plus relocate to a shadier location or into a cool outbuilding.
Yes that’s a great idea about the chilled water bottles. I demolished the garage when we moved in to enlarge the garden, the boys are planning improved hutch designs as the nursery runs we built were not successful. IMG_2620.webpIMG_2618.webpIMG_2615.webpIMG_2482.webp
