Hi all,

with my interview around the corner, I am starting to look at rifles.

Typical this time of year with children and a nagging wife wanting things, I am on a bit of a budget and looking at a HOWA 1500 package in .270.

Anyone who uses would you give me a small review please on things you like and don't like about it.

My mentor uses all the top of the range, which is perfect for me now whilst i stalk with him but has kind of been hard for me also as i have nothing on the cheaper side to compare too as the price tags is currently way out of my budget.

My plan is to get a package with a Howa 1500 or something similar price tag and then upgrade the glass and mod in the new year when i get my bonus from work.

Thank you
tom

There a good solid rifle. My mate has one. It actually got ran over on the road, it's still got the tyre mark on it and the gravel rash on the mod. The scope broke off and the bolt handle snapped off, that got Tig welded back on and a new scope put on and it's fine. He shot a fox at 260yrds ok with it the other day. So plenty accurate enough.

As stated, good solid rifle, half decent trigger that can be improved quite easily, I have a Wheatherby vanguard (same rifle) in .243 it's served me well, with reloads it's easily capable of .5" groups or better, so what's not to like 🤔

Used to have the Howa Axiom in 308, brilliant gun. Shot like a 223. Highly recommend this model if you can still get one.

I bought a used .270 from this site some time back and also picked up a laminate stock off here for it. I genuinely couldn't be happier with both purchases and don't know why the Howa brand isn't more high profile/appreciated.

They are fantastic quality at a brilliant price.

I own three 1500s in 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC and .223, all purchased as barreled actions. Concur with all of the above. You don’t get the same slick bolt feel as a Tikka, but it’s not agricultural by any means. Had to file the bolt stop on the .223 as it didn’t always pick up rounds (magazine fed), but this is a known issue and plenty of guidance out there on how to rectify - 15 minute job. Howa 1500 definitely worth considering. Would I have got Tikka/Sako/Blaser? Yes, but my money tree died when kids arrived.

You’ll struggle to find a bad one and lots of aftermarket extras if that’s your thing.

I had a howa 22-250 for a long time and it was a brilliant rifle. Simple and no frills, but it was very reliable and never missed a beat.
I now have a Bergara which I’d put in the same category of simple no nonsense sort of kit, also very well priced.

My .223 Howa groups like a shotgun. That doesn't seem common though - they have a good reputation. I'm going to get mine looked at.

I bought a second hand 1500 package in 243. Lucky to get it with the mod and scope I did for the price. It’s fussy with ammo but I’ve found a couple of factory loads that group well. Reliable as in it goes bang when I want it too and the round goes where I want it too, nice to handle and fire, 3 position safety and easy to remove the bolt. When it’s shot out I’ll just scrap it and buy another. It does it’s job. Highly recommend

I had one - it was alright but not much more than that.

They work well and mine was pretty accurate but they are clunky and rough. Mine was .308 and I really didn’t like that either so it didn’t help.

You will end up wanting to upgrade at some point but it’s a good first choice for the money.

I have a .243 with heavy varmit barrel. Silly accurate with 75 vmax.
I purchased it SH. Trigger has been fettled
up and now in a GRS stock
Can't fault it.

I have 2 - a 6.5x55 with the standard barrel and a 22-250 with a varmint barrel. I restocked both (couldn’t get on with the flexible hogue stocks) and fettled the triggers. The are both workhorse rifles but shoot exceptionally well. For the price nothing beats them.

I’m on 1200+ rounds through my 223. 95% reloaded warm, not hot. No issues with accuracy.

I used the hogue stock for years with no issues but changed to a B&C as it was a decent price.

Good rifle, I’d be quite happy with another in any cal. I plan to re-barrel mine when it does see too many rounds
