Roe rut possibly starting?

On and off in N Lancs. 2 weekends ago there was a lot of activity-it was very hot and damp though. Last night it poured down then stopped and was very humid so I popped out to a bit close to my house and got a poor buck that was following a doe (with twins). I’d expect activity to get going over the next week then peak end of first week in August, bucks coming to the call better the later it goes…in other words absolutely normal 🤣

In other news…how in gods green earth do you attach an image to your post these days? I’ve emailed it to myself, saved it which usually works, saved it to files, that doesn’t work!! You need a degree in IT these days.

Hampshire. This one wasn't interested in the call, he was covering a doe. Had a young buck come charging in under the high seat but he showed promise so hopefully he will take over the vacant space left by this buck.
Does were semi interested coming to the call now and then or completely disinterested.
A good friend shot a buck a few fields away who came charging in to the call.
A bit patchy but it's happening.DSC_0127.webp

Had a wander about last week and this week in West Oxon and nothing. No signs of activity and no response to call.

Know my resident bucks, so when my landowner sent me a picture of a young buck strutting about last night was off there today......but bloody gout struck around 2am......and my big toe resembles an angry red bratwurst.....

Weather iffy over the weekend but clear sunny with low 20s Tues and Wed....so hoping the toe has calmed down by then. Can't even get a boot on today.

Out last night in South Glos. Five roe seen, including 2 bucks, one with 2 does. Both bucks totally uninterested in my calling but I did get another doe steaming into 5m before she joined the buck with 2 does. They were not phased by the calling and continued to mooch around a grass field just off my permission 😔

Meanwhile, from a trail camera about 300m away……

Ok
Hampshire

Quiet here. Lot of does with kids about. Bucks scarce. 2 dumb youngsters came to call but nothing of significance about yet

Exactly the same here. Plenty of does but no bucks showing. Next warm spell might change things. North west Lancashire

Glad that's on your land and nowhere near mine @wytonpjs ........as I said......Im too old and fat to have to haul Palminated bucks about now......😀.

Nice animal though 👍.

Out yesterday evening and saw 15+ does. Not a single buck and absolutely no sign of rutting at all.

It looked like what you’d expect AFTER the rut!
Very similar here now. I thought it was on last week, but apart from a juvenile buck shadowing a doe over the last couple of evenings it's like a desert now 🤔 I'm surrounded by forest, so I wonder if most activity is either happening under cover, or at night. Temperature is up and down just now too, that might have an impact as well

How things change. Rain at home today then sunny humid etc Farmer just sent me this. About 20 yards from his house. Why did I decide to go to the New Forest show today ……
That looks like a funky one! one that I'd be keen to catch up on ASAP

Just called a 5 point buck in from 200ish to about 40 yards. He came in so quick he was clear of any backstop by the time he stopped. My 12 year old boy loved it though.

I know its roe rut thread, but I guess I brought in a ked from that red deer a few nights ago.

My father is now discovering them for the first time as Its escaped downstairs in the living room, and the joys? this one has wings, it hadn't chewed them off yet Its been on him twice so far

Yep it’s def on. Strolled up to an area can glass a good few rolling fields and shaws. Buck and doe chasing hard. 250 yards. Good steady prone shot but decided not to as in standing wheat. Tried to call buck in but just Couldn’t. They laid up a while and I got him to his feet with the rape call. Then a couple of steps forward. Doe must have said something because he looked at her then went back and laid down. Not for moving. Another time

Drove back down farm tracks to home. Went for a wander to find farmer in yard He has changed padlock on one of the gates and i don’t have the key yet. Not there. As usual. So abort plan for that area. Walking back to truck and see a couple of patches in the cut barley the combine must have missed. About 150 yards from my house. Sloppy I think. Hang on a mo! That could be deer. Yep Binos confirmed decent buck with doe. Pretty flat and no backstop. Except the village. Grab rifle. Run in to house up to gunroom above garage. Open window. Can’t see them. Tree in way. Booger. Out the house and drive truck onto edge of field. Drop rear gate and climb up with rifle on bipod on roof. Now they need to move forward about 60 yards and left about 60 and they Will be in a nice safe dip

After a bit of running in circles they oblige. A shout stops them and the 7mm Rem Mag does its work

A slightly unusual head for round here. Very typical of the roe I used to shoot near Shere. Antlers very close together and straight up with no Y shape

Hampshire again, about ten miles from my previous post.
Turned up to farmyard last night just as a thunderstorm passed over and rain fell.
Started a walk around, saw a buck and doe across a field but hard to get a safe shot, came in to the first pheep on the caller and maneuvered them until a shot was on and dropped the buck.
They didn't stop to question the call, just steamed in.
The night before I was getting more reaction to the Buttalo, last night it was the Cherry wood. 🤷🏻‍♂️

For the buttolo are you guys just doing fawn-esc peeps, or the rape/doe chase distress call? The guy I go stalking with only does the distress, I have a hunch not many deer are all that willing to come into that straight away especially the more satellite-esc bucks that are without a doe since they've been chased off.

I start with Pheeps - into a slightly closed fist. Then after a few goes of that switch to unprotected calling so quite loud This over about 40 minutes and good gaps between call sessions

I only use rape call if I can actually see the buck and other calls didn't work
