Royal Mail Consultation on Transport of Firearms and components

Some will have seen post about BASC website problem.

Effectively stems from a proposal from Royal Mail to prohibit carriage of all firearms and components from November 2012.

Given SD's record ability to generate myth and legend ( I've NO idea where the impression that JAYB is good looking came from  ) thought may help to post -

Royal Mail Proposal and Reasoning -

Responses needed by 17th September 2012.

BASC Webpage notes -

There may well be other details on other sporting organisation websites - I simply havent looked yet. If anyone else has, you are most welcome to post the links here.

We are members of BASC - and several other organisations. I am posting the link because I had it and it was the route by which I became aware of the issue. I am not posting to say 'nah, nah n nah na' look at BASC, to slight any other organisation, to promote global domination, to flog more DSC1 courses, etc etc etc - it would be very disappointing if this post was taken as an invitation for the prevalent 'bashing' and 'in fighting' that has made SD so depressing of late*. Please take in that context... And you've never seen me very disappointed! :D

* feel free to respond to this bit on another post.

Posted for the information for all and would just ask that if anyone feels strongly on this issue they dedicate the same energy to contacting Royal Mail, their MP etc as they do to penning responses here.

I thank you.

So what did Martin have to say when you called him?

It could make life difficult for everyone if they ever buy gun parts on the internet. Currently Royal Mail is the only carrier that will transport guns around for the private individual. All other carriers require you to either have a business account or be an RFD.

Basically if you shoot anything, you should be replying to these proposals. Please take time to read the link above and e-mail Royal mail AND Ofcom the regulators and let them know what you think. If we sit back on our hands and do nothing that will be another nail in the coffin of shooting in the UK.

The Royal Mail are proposing changes

Hello Chaps

Not knowing if this is a long time issue but an RFD I use has brought it to my attention and I want to pass it on to you, The Royal Mail are proposing changes to ban the posting of firearms, air guns and component parts. This will affect all of us if these proposals go through and may result in the closure of many UK based gun shops as there is no other alternative service to ship your orders. Please see the Royal Mail link below and respond to it before the 17th Sept 2012.

As customers we rely on the Royal Mail to ship your orders to us, then you should be entitled to respond to these proposals. Overseas customers please also respond.

Please email your responses to zoe.allchorn@royalmail.com and cc it also to martin.anderson@royalmail.com

Thank You.

Bearing in mind the Post Office is constantly moaning how people are not postig things in today's modern world you woud think they would not want to lose more customers.

It just goes to show this is politically motivated. Just another attack by the gray suits on shooting and shooters.

Garry, I am not in a position to more than summarily read the consultation or to draft a proper response as we had our first child this week - hence busy with other things. What did you specifically write in your objections to the consultation? Could you please send me the text?

Cheers,
Ado

Just another brick in the wall!

Please read this below and respond accordingly. I apologise if you have already received this information

The Royal Mail are trying to change their postal schemes to ban the posting of all firearms and air guns, inc component parts.

They have tried to rush this through and hope to implement it on or before the 30th Nov 2012.

They have published the consultation document on the 15th of this month and responses have to be in by the 17th Sept. This was kept very quiet and done when most people are still on holiday and Westminster is closed for the summer.

Please have a look at the link below and pass on this email to as many shooters as you can. Feel free to put in a response to this consultation and contact your local MP's.

Looking at thier reasoning, it seems to all come down to an ass-covering exeercise: they seem to be very concerned that they can't provide reasonable security while firearms are in their posession. Since they (probably) can't ultimately do this without spending quite a bit of money, and since firearms probably represent a very small fraction of thier income, my guess is that there's really nothing that can be done. This smacks of a decision already taken. The only way to stop it would be to convince them that they were not liable if something went wrong while a firearms was in theit posession - and since this cannot be the case unless the law is changed in quite a complicated way, then it's game over.

I think they're relying on the incorrect exemption for possession of firearms 'in their care'

rather than being exempt because they are a 'carrier' - they are exempt because as employees of the royal mail, they are crown servants, therefore the points they make regards all the other bits are irrelevant.

I just about get my head round the non transporting of firearms rifles shoguns airifles etc, but gun parts and the rest of it etc etc I can't get my head round not for a second......

Hi All

Hi Zoe

I am writing to you as a B.A.S.C. member about the proposed ban on the posting of gun parts. PLEASE DO NOT IMPLEMENT THIS CHANGE this change would cause me a lot of expense and inconvenience the parts that are sent through the post are essential to me as a pest controller.

many thanks for your time in reading this

To quote:
22. Carriers, such as Parcelforce Worldwide, a part of the Royal Mail Group, TNT Express, and
other express couriers who can meet the carrier duties will continue to be able to service these
customers. Unlike us, Parcelforce Worldwide identifies the contents of the package to confirm
whether a Firearm is present; this is then uniquely flagged by tracking systems to ensure the
item is not lost or mislaid within the network. They are in a position to ensure that acceptance
and delivery can only be made from and to Registered Firearms Dealers
