Ruger 10/22 improved?

Iv had a 10/22 for years mainly for rabbit but recently joining local club and started target shooting at the range.

My rifle is totally standard at the min but want to get the best gains for accuracy for least amount of money. What would be the best route to go down. Barrel trigger stock ??

Is it not accurate?
That's not quite true Ben. Yes I agree it's never going to be as accurate as a bolt action rifle but for short range club level gallery rifle events a fairly basic 10/22 is more than up to the job.
Both I and my daughter shot a standard 10/22 for a number of years with some success regularly competing against others shooting highly tricked out 10/22s. The only modifications that we made to our rifle was lightening the trigger, converting the bolt to auto release, and fitting an extended magazine release. Total cost of these alterations was about £10 plus a little bit of my time fettling it with stones and a file. A couple of our fellow club members shot Volquartsen 10/22 rifles but we never felt outgunned because our standard 10/22 was far more reliable with hardly any feed problems unlike the tight chambered Volquartsen which can be very ammo sensitive.
Shooting good ammo like SK or RWS is the answer and avoid crap ammo regardless of price.

The 10/22 is one of those rifles where you can "upgrade" at any time, there's almost no part that can't be changed to suit your tastes or belief that it will improve your scores.

The joy of the 10/22, you can change everything on them!

You can spend as much as you want and buy some very fancy upgrades.

Simple stuff helps improve operation and manipulation.
  • Replace the steel recoil stop with a polymer one. Tuffer Buffer is the brand one. Smooths the recoil.
  • Volquartsen EDM extractor
  • Volquartsen sure strike firing pin
  • Extended bolt handle
  • Automatic bolt release
  • Extended mag release
You can work on the trigger, but results can vary and it is easier to swap it out in my opinion YMMV. The Ruger BX trigger is a solid upgrade with the bolt release and mag improved. You can spend a lot of money here if you want with things like Timney, Volquartsen and Kidd.

Stocks and barrels, world is your oyster. Ideally its best to get hands on with them, other shooters may be kind enough to let you shoulder their rifles to see how they fit you and balance in hand to get an idea of what will work for you.

For stocks on the 10/22, I like the Hogue overmolded ones, comfortable and grippy.

In relation to barrels, I found 16.5” bull was the right balance, the carbon fibre and graphite ones were too light. Consider ones with the 'Bentz' chamber which should give a happy medium between accuracy and reliability.

Best thing is, if something doesn't work you can just swap it out again!

My 10/22 sits in a Nordic Components chassis and uses standard AR15 recoil buffer tube, butt, friend, etc covering a standard 16.5” barrel. Polymer recoil stop with Volquartsen firing pin, extractor and titanium bolt handle, extended mag release and a number of spring changes. All of these aid reliability not accuracy although that’s more than good enough for at range bunny bashing. It used to have a 20” Volquartsen tension barrel with integral moderator but I find the shorter standard barrel no less accurate. Great fun to shoot with the Cobra red dot sight - only issue is loading 25-round magazines fast enough 🤭 As said above, there’s all manner of bits and bobs out there and its so easy to modify and change the world is your oyster. Ringing steel at 60m and beyond is a great way to spend time in between target changes on the range.

If you're going to upgrade your 10/22 with drop-in parts, start with a decent trigger.

Then change one thing at a time and try it.

Change too many things and if it stops working reliably you'll not know which one or combinations of things caused the issue.

As someone who shoots and ROs a fair bit of gallery rifle your whole post sums it up. A reliable gun and someone who knows how to use it will beat most people. I use SK and the only problem is it can be a bit greasy so you need to keep the chamber area clean.

I would shoot a few comps and see what you feel needs changing.

You're spot on there as regards cleanliness. You don't have to go to extremes just not let the gunk accumulate, plus of course occasionally stripping and cleaning the magazines (make sure you properly re-tension them, plenty of advise on the internet).
The larger capacity magazines may be fun but we found the standard 10 round magazines to work best, and never buy any magazines with plastic feed lips.

Sell it and buy a CZ457 - coz that will be far more accurate than your Ruger :)

Cheers

It certainly is Bruce, but not much cop if he's shooting gallery rifle events which is what the majority of 10/22 shooters use the rifle for when shooting with a club.
Just for fun I shot the timed and precision event a couple of times using my 452 but for the final stage you had to be pretty nifty with the bolt.

P.S. I didn't come last and I ****ed a few people off because I actually managed to do it.

I upgraded my 28 year old model with a BX trigger unit and extended bolt release from Rimfire Magic and it has made a big difference, no misfires or feed problems anymore.
