Sako 85 .223

I have two Sako 85 .223's. A Varmint with a 60cm barrel and a Hunter with a 57cm barrel. Both are 1:12" and have set triggers. The Varmint is a blued walnut while the Hunter is a laminated stainless and does service as an all-weather Quad rifle. With my hand loads both achieve 0.25 MOA or better at 100m off a bipod and rear bag. Wonderful rifles that I'll never part with.

If you fancy something different, cal wise. Give gunsmith steve kershaw a phone. He did my custom sako75 204ruger 1 in 10 twist barrel. 20150323_194147.webp
 
I had/have a T3 and Sako 75, both in 204, both superb rifles and I love both. There was a lot more upgrades available for the T3, Edi inlettted and bedded it into one of his Etac stocks for me. Where as there's very little available for the Sako. But I prefer the Sako because
1) the shorter action matched to the cartridge length
2) the option to top load the ammo and the double stack mag
3) the safe unload ability.
Mine wears the laminate stock but I want to change the stock for something ambi/left hand. The only option was to source a blank and get it inletted. Nearly every other 75 and 85 action length is catered for except 75 action I.

I think you'll be very happy if you choose the 85 and there seems to be a lot more aftermarket bits available for it than the 75's
 
Why go semi custom?
You're unlikely to get much more out of .223 than a sako can offer. I had a fast twist 75 and it shot very well, sold it due to lack of use.

Get the 85 and spend your money and time on something else more fulfilling..

I have a Pac Nor barrel on my .204 and it's very nice. Coupled with the Jewel trigger and custom stock made me think semi custom was the way forward. After read the reviews on the Sako it seems it may be the way to go. I am only in the early stages of enjoying longer range shooting so a custom may wait until my ticket is open and I can look a a totally different cal.
In no rush so I will keep trawling the usual haunts and see what pops up.
 
If you can pick up an old decent sako action for 350 it would make a good base for a semi custom.

It all really depends on what you want, off the shelf Tikka,Howard, Remy or something a little special.
 
please excuse my ignorance. How do you go about buying a rifle or action to get re barrelled if your ticket has a slot for a .223? And the rifle isn't?
 
Needs to go to an rfd if you dont have the cal on your ticket. My 204 was a 222 and got it sent to steve kershaw who did the work.
