Sako L461

I’ve had an itch for a 223 and found a good condition Sako L461 Vixen, would be around 1980 from the action mark and serial number. Pre CNC machining.

Recommendations for blued bases and rings for these? Optilocks still the preferred? Will be wearing in all likelihood a 6x42 or 8x56.

If anyone has a good used set, happy to hear - scope to be acquired yet so doesn’t matter if inch or 30mm.

There are several options for mounts for Sako rifles. The most common are the Sako Optilocks, but, in my opinion, they are less than ideal. First, they are two-part mounts with (1) a base that slides onto the Sako tapered dovetail and (2) a ring that attaches to this base. That setup--and any mount that adds a base to the integral dovetail--is redundant, adding extra parts and weight. In addition, the standard Optilocks mount the scope higher than is ideal--even with their lowest option.

A far better choice, in my opinion, is either (1) the Leupold ring mounts designed for the Sako dovetail or (2) the Sako Optilock Ring Mounts. The latter, despite their name, are not the standard two-piece Optilocks, but rather a one-piece mount. Pic below. I have these on a Sako 85. Both the Leupold and Sako ring mounts are one-piece, are lighter than standard Optilocks, are available in both 1" and 30 mm., and allow a lower scope mounting than the standard two-piece Optilocks. I prefer the Sako version because they are more nicely-finished than the Leupolds, have the polymer spherical protective sleeve, and are 4-screw rings, as opposed to the 2-screw Leupolds.

Another option would be the original vintage Sako scope mounts. Like the Sako ring mounts, these are one-piece mounts that slide directly on to the Sako tapered dovetail. They are available in 1" only and are pretty hard to find (at least here in Canada). They are wonderful mounts with windage adjustment.

Thankyou SP - much appreciated!

I have Optilocks on all six of my Sakos. Never had an issue with them. One set is the Ringmount model and I would recommend these, if you can source them. As mentioned above the normal Optis are two-piece and this could cause some grief. The latest version are slightly better given that the base and ring are indexed.
A few years ago I stumbled over a vid (on YouTube?) showing how a bloke had his rings and bases laser-welded together. I would love to do this but I can't find anyone in my neck of the woods who can do it.

Cheers
