Sauer 101

Test driven & its typical Sauer quality, not as pretty as the 202 but cant go wrong with well built, smooth and reliable IMO

Picking mine up on Monday... Can't wait.

Had the pick of pretty much anything up to £1.5k and the 101 got my vote.

Feels like Tikka 595 ugly cousin to 202 i feel the safety is huge improvement over 202

101 in 308

Have had a play with a couple of 101's now, they look like a cracking rifle - I fully expect them to be a top seller, one thing I will say is when laid against a 202 you can see that they are not up to the 202's quality - but that's to be expected with the price difference.

they will be as accurate as any sporting shooter/stalker will ever need and the whole thing about the shrunk fit barrel isn't that big a deal in my opinion as I know people who have had a rifle for literally 10+ years and put thousands of rounds through them and never needed to change a barrel.

gixer

Had mine (synthetic stock) for a couple of weeks now in .308 and very pleased indeed. I previously had a 202 with high grade wood but worried about the stock every time I got in to a high seat! My 101 is very accurate and sweet shooting. Nice trigger, good balance & good value for money. Incidentally I also bought an Aimsport Cyclone + which is remarkable. I can now see the point of impact which I had failed to achieve with previous 308s. There's a short review on my blog.

A mate of mine just bought a 101 in 30-06..and is very impressed with it at the range at least.... .hes up later in the month after reds with it...I'll have a try as well, looking forward to it too...:)

Awesome picture there, I think I might have to go back and have a play with one before I commit. An awful lot of money for a first rifle :S

This is a very relevant thread for me, I've been toying with the idea of getting a rifle like this purely for deer, as I currently use a 243 for both fox and deer. Seems like good value for money as a synthetic version, shame there seems to be such a wide range in the quality of wood on the other version!! Some examples look rather nice and others look pretty naff. Good as a Sako? Only time will tell, but unless I'm mistaken you can't get a cheaper synthetic/blued Sako can you? That would edge it slightly for me

What about Sako A7?

The naff wood was even mentioned by the guy down at Ivythorn he said that they ordered one in for a chap and it looked like ply-board :S

Of the three he had on the wall 2 were very nice and although one was a bit boring at best.

So, I picked mine up on Monday.

Ive had the chance to put a box of ammo through it and get it zero'd and I'm really pleased with it. It feels nice, its very tactile and the synthetic stock is durable but soft to touch, not just cheap hard plastic. I originally wanted a stainless barrel, but I'm now happy with the durable black finish that Sauer use.

Pros:
I love the 5 shot flush fitting magazine, a doddle to use without having to look where the release catch it and I love the fact it sits flush and doesnt project out.
The saftey is discrete, very safe (it is dual action so you need to depress a button and slide the catch at the same time) and is easy to use.
The bolt action is smooth but solid - like a german car.
Its easy to strip - 2 bolts to remove the trigger guard, 1 bolt to drop the action out. Thats it.

Cons;
Only one really - the sling stud. If your not going to use a bipod, the position of the front stud is actually lovely - out of the way of your fore hand and sits very pretty on the diamond part right at the top. However mine is in 243 and will be used off the top of the Landrover for foxing, so a bipod is essential for me. Sauer thoughtfully have moulded in a block to accept the stud and avoid stripping, so no issue there, but you are then left with either a hole in the stock or 2 sling studs. I went for the former and have found a bubber grommet to fill the hole. I'm sure Sauer could have thought this through a little more, but as Ivythorne told me, these are designed mainly with the European hunter in mind and they rarely use a bipod.

That aside I'm chuffed with it and Ive got a package that will last a lifetime I hope. Ive popped a Zeiss Duralyt 3-12x50 on top and an Aimzonic Compact mod on the end.

Very nice Adam,

Looks awesome. That little mod looks tiny - did Ivythorn sort it all out? You'll have to PM me with the damage :D

The black on black looks pretty good - I wouldn't be unhappy.

I bought the scope off here 2nd hand.

i don't mind sharing the costs. Yes Ivythorne did the rifle and mod. I paid list price for both....unlike me I usually push for a deal!

This time however, I had over 4 hours of Ivythornes time, spent nearly 2 hours on their range and used about 3 boxes of bullets, all FOC.

The rifle was £1395 the mod was £250. They did me a set of Leupold bases and QR rings for £50 instead of £80/90.

I think the Sauer is worth the extra 400 or so over a Tikka. However the Howa is great value for money and its a tough call comparing value for money between them... The Sauer is more than double the price, is it double the gun? I went for it as I want a gun to last, don't want to keep swapping and changing.

It is certainly miles better than my Remy 700 it replaced.

did you try other rifles out on the range or just the sauer?

I'd also forgotten to mention about the sling swivel at the front. Is there a quick fix so you can mound a Harris to it?
