Schmidt & Bender 8x56 illuminated advice.

Hi all,

Looking at getting a new S&B 8x56 Klassik illuminated L3 for my rifle. Most of the shooting I do is in the range of 100-250/300 meters. Would this be a suitable scope for this? Or would a swarovski Z6i 2.5-15x56 be more suitable? Tend to shoot roe/red deer within 50-250 meters and foxes I'm willing to push it out to 300 but never shooting anything further than 300 meters.

Just want to keep it simple, have tried ballistic turrets and can say I never really use them.

Any opinions/advice would be appreciated
Thanks

I like the idea of simplicity but at those ranges with my eyes I would choose the flexibility of the variable Swarovski.
If you said sub 150m roe/fox and 200m red then maybe, albeit my eyes and opinion.

Schmidt & Bender Klassik German 2.5-10x56 Illuminated FFP L3 ASV Rifle Scope

Would that maybe be better suited than the 8×56?

Will certainly be good for your stalking , however the stadia on them is a bit thick for targets and 8x is going to be a disadvantage ( in comps ) . A very good stalking scope if your ok with the heft . Don't buy a new one there are loads available second hand and S&B are crazy money new today but i gave up on that .
Consider a good Picatinny base and get something like a Leopold varible with paralax correction to say 16-20 mag at the top end , with target turrets and a fine cross hair for precise target work . The fatter cross hairs and other designs are far better for stalking which an 8x56 or 6x42 are ideal .
I have done a lot of both disapplies . A S+B will loose too much cash just turning it into second hand and they are very ,very tough

So maybe the s&b 2.5-10x56 Klassik would suit better what you reckon lads?
Had my eye on that myself. I think you’d just about have enough legs for what you want to do. Isn’t there a 3-12x which would be better. But S&B are grown up scopes proper quality

I had the same thoughts, too much faff when you need to take a quick shot with the variable scopes, parralex etc

Put 8x56 illuminated on my 30-06, zero’d using the mpbr method and point and shoot to 250m with a 3” kill zone👍

That's why am wanting to get it buddy, what ranges you shooting at roughly

I also like that the 8X56 is so simple to use. I always have some idea of the range of the deer because the magnification never changes etc. I've shot deer from the other side of the wall - literally I popped my head up on one side and the deer popped it's head up on the other side so range a few steps - up to about 250 yards or so. Due to rushes and clear fell and so on I'm sometimes only left with the option of head shots and on sika hinds and calves that means the target isn't huge but I've never thought that I need something other than the S&B that I have. I've used variable scopes in various makes and models but for stalking I don't need them. Your mileage may vary of course but I'm somewhat lacking in talent and if it works for me then there isn't a single other person on earth that it isn't going to work for.

For once I can answer a post with expertise as I have both. The .270 has the 8x56 klassik and the 6.5 has the z6i albeit with the turrets. Not withstanding the cost difference I will say is that if I had to chose one scope only for the rest of my life it would be the swaro. The glass and red dot is just better and the extended mag gives a better sight picture. At 100m I can pretty much drop shots on top of each other but with the s&b it’s much harder due to lack of mag.

Foxes are bloody small at 300 yards through the s&b. That being said the Schmidt for woodland stalking sub 100 is brilliant.

Why afford a fox less respect than a deer ? Get a decent variable in excess of 10x. Swaro don't suit me personally, but for zeroing and longer shots, you'll benefit from 12x or more, but you can keep it dialled back to 8x (for FoV) when required. Test your actual drops at distance so you don't need to f** aboot with turrets.
