Schmidt & Bender 8x56 illuminated advice.

I would have a close look at a 3-12x50 Schmidt & Bender Zenith with hunter BDC turret on elevation turret and FD7. We have kitted out several hunters here with these. Once one uses the features it is way better than the 8x56. Not too complicated either. I have used one for roughly 15 years. Ideal for short and long range shots, at a push even for running game. I do not have faith in hunters holding over at distances of 250-300m, wouldn't trust myself either.

I went with the klassic long range 4-16 with the BDC turret for that reason. Enough elevation on the single turn with a 20moa rail which is bang on for 430 yards.
Ran it through ballistics profile which I knew to be true, wrapped the turret with hash marks for every 50 odd yards. It's now quite as simple as range, dial to the number on the turret and you're good to go.

If purchasing a variable scope with an illuminated reticle, the Op would do well to first establish if he warms to one in the 1st or 2nd focal plane.

Also, don't underestimate the advantage of adjustable parralex if your eyes aren't in their first flush of youth.
