Seating die issues

It seems if you’ve read the manuals and online data/info/youtube instruction, it’s clear you haven’t yet understood the detail properly.
You need to clearly understand what to do, how to do it and why.

You really need to find some one to one help on reloading before you either damage your rifle or injure yourself.

Take care and go through the whole process again thoroughly and most importantly, find someone who knows how to reload safely and get them to show you.

Totally agree reed but if there’s a simple solution then it’s worth asking. Won’t fire anything until I’m happy.

the powder/primer/ case prep is all self explanatory. If I can just get the bullet to seat nicely,(which is easy enough to tell with a caliper) I’ll be grand.

Witebeard, appreciate that. I’m sure I read on here that I needed to resize new brass but I could be wrong. Even the resized stuff actually looks okay dimension wise. It’s onky the “seated” brass that looked wrong.

Cheers!

Had a similar thing today with a 223 die set up wrong, touching the shell holder and then an extra 1/8 turn, made a nice mess of the case neck!.

This was a Lee seating which die also crimps so it needs to be set carefully, usually (as said earlier) set to barely touch the case then back it off, I usually go at least a 1/2 turn.

If you don't need to roll over crimp into a cannelure leave it there and adjust the seating depth. If you do want to crimp adjust it down in 1/16 turns until it starts to crimp, it only needs to be a very small amount.

Personally I leave the die backed out and use the Lee factory crimp, no roll over and a more even crimp.

Thanks! I’ll Definitely persevere because it really shouldn’t be that difficult. Fingers crossed backing it off sorts it.

just for the record, I know I can be a little aggressive with my posts sometimes but nobody wants to hear of a nasty incident regarding reloading. be cautious, take your time check and question anything that doesn't feel, sound,or look correct. when you have a few hundred rounds under your belt you will look back and be thankful you asked.

This might sound daft, but have you actually checked the diameter of the bullet. It has been known for .270 (actual diameter .277) to be confused with 7mm (actual diameter .284).
Frrom close inspection of the seated case, it appears as though considerable force has been exerted to get the bullet to seat, I can see deformation of the ballistic tip, as well as marks on the bullet, quite some bulging on the neck, as well as the shoulder ( doughnut ).
I’d try seating a bullet in an unsized case and see if your getting the same result.
When seating a bullet into a case with the correct neck tension, you should be able to seat it as deep or as long as you like without adverse consequences for the case.

Resizing the brand new brass, how did you get the expander into the case on the first stroke up?
Or did you just leave that out? This would explain some of the mess.

Wildfowler don't throw the case away its more than likely salvageable but just needs to be resized. Then go back to stage one and set up your dies correctly following the die manufacturers directions not the directions of any other maker or of anyone else.

It looks to me that you have simply been trying to push an already seated bullet deeper into a case that has already been crimped, we've all done it at some time.

Thank you for all the help guys. Really appreciate it! Backing the die off a little worked a charm and it’s bang on now.

Many thanks again!

(attached a wee photo of the earlier blank round - was aiming for 0.001” less than that. Now to just go back and try some with powder :D ).

The case fits in the magazine nicely. Took a fresh case and it fed (primed with no bullet) well and bolt closed.

Seated a bullet to 3.320” into a blank case and it picks up from the mag nicely but I can’t close the bolt handle. Back to the drawing board

Im going to double check my full length sizing as that seems the logical next step as I’m well under saami max by 0.2”.

Measure the neck diameter before and after seating the bullet, normally 2 thou difference ie neck tension. There might be a size stamped on the action.

I think I’ve sorted it. I resized the initial case and it made no difference. There was a tiny burr on the neck which I had noticed and did wonder if that was to blame,(did try chamfering it again).

So before tearing my hair out I reseated a different case and it loads perfectly,(going to try one more).

Lesson learned is I think I’ll test all my final cases in the gun before they get the final seal of approval. Maybe a touch ocd but wouldn’t want a mess up in the field.

Cheers!

I take it you have a kinetic hammer for pulling the bullets from practice seating. IE not using pliers/grips!!!

Yes it’s been invaluable

Theyre chamfering nicely so finally there now. Just need to test them at the weekend.

Everyones help has been brilliant. Will update how the targets go!

Sounds like you might have a fairly tight chamber/throat. Your factory rounds have been OK, I presume.
