Just a quick product review following my recent experiences with Shadowfoam. I have an SKB case that I use for international travel that had new foam one trip ago. The soft foam did protect the contents but didn’t cut cleanly which led to ragged edges and a disappointing finish. On return to the UK the foam had started to tear around the corners and clearly needed replacement. After a few short UK trips it has become barely fit for purpose. Fast forward a few months and I was fortunate to read a post by @Stuart Mitchell who had a very swanky case cut for some custom knives and he mentioned Shadowfoam as a less costly alternative that could be DIY’d which seemed like a good idea to me.
I ordered the foam to the size of my case and set about getting the foam to fit the case first before starting to cut the recesses for the rifles using a scalpel. This turned out to be straightforward as the foam was firm and the outline cut nicely. The foam in the recesses is removed using fingers and the layered structure allows removal of varying depths of foam so that ultimately each item is well supported and lies horizontally. In total it took me about 2 hours of cutting/plucking. There is a tool to smooth out the bottom surfaces of each recess which I haven’t used yet and foam can be glued back in if a mistake is made. There are some excellent videos from Shadowfoam on You Tube that are worth watching.
Time will tell if the foam stands up to repeated transit but it seems very robust so suspect that it will. The equipment fits the case perfectly and all I need to do is tidy up some of the recesses. All in all I’m very happy so far.
