Shell Holder Deck Height

Does anyone have any awareness of any higher deck height shell holders other than the Redding Competition sets. I’d happily get the comp set but it’s for a K Hornet and the no 14s aren’t in stock.

I have a 35 degree shoulder K Hornet which limits me to a redding full length die (I wish I could get a body die for a K Hornet but that’s off topic). With my Lee shell holder, and the die fully bottomed out, the die doesn’t move the shoulder back. I cut another case down to use as a shoulder / bump gauge after I was still getting some sticky bolt closures. It confirmed that the shoulder measurement doesn’t change.

I’ve just run a couple of cases through with a piece of cut steel shim stock at 0.003”. I can still get the case in and it is now bumping them 1.5-2 thou. I can keep going like this for the time being but if anyone knew that one brand trended higher that’d be some useful info.

Thanks in advance

Try a Redding case holder you might have a tolerance stacking problem. The full lenght die could be dehardened shortened and then rehardened.

milling some thou from the shell holder face may do the trick and the Lee ones are rather thick so you'll still have plenty of metal to hold the brass without mismatch the die. If you don't have easy access to a late you can DIY by placing the SH in a mandrell drill and rotate ita over a layer of sand paper flattened over a glass.

Redding set won't help you. They only offer increased base of brass to top of holder dimensions, i.e. less shoulder bump.

I'd remove some material from the top of your shell holder. Cheaper to replace if botched, and doing it manually (piece of glass or other flat surface, sand paper) it's easier to keep the holder in correct position than the die.

Check the deckheight of your Lee shellholder first….you never know, I had one that was out of spec n buggered a box of Lapua being set up for the .20Prac! 🤬

Better still, replace it with a Redding to match the die. 👍
