Ive had plenty of chats with my old MP, and they respond to constituents, especially if jobs in rural economies are effected and to well presented constituent points.

Please point to BASC successes over the last 20 years.

In the 15-20 years I’ve shot more deer than what most people could dream of, and if 1 added up every penny that I’ve earnt including clients and then what I have spent I would be big time in the minus!

I’m by no means , I do not have fancy kit I will assure you, my rifle, last two rifles have been Ruger M 77 cost me no more than £300 my wife bought my binoculars 15 years ago, I’ve had my thermal well over five years, I’m on my second quad because I killed the first one, my cold room now has a mono block, which is now five years old that was £3K and I could keep going, those are costs you will never get back from running carcasses into the Game Dealer . I’ve given up trying!

I do what I do now to keep landowners. Happy to keep my FAC going. I am very fortunate that I don’t have to start an engine to go stalking or pay for my cold room to run if I did I’ve sold up a long time ago.

That’s just few facts of reality!

Those few friends I have on this forum will happily confirm this.

To be honest if there was a bounty on deer of £150+ a head I would come full-time out of semi retirement and get Fell in because that is worth the graft anything less and be brutally honest it’s not worth doing it’s just fun and games

Until I can get that kind of money or more I’ll just give them away.

So say 200 deer a year average of 40kg a carcass (pure guess) @ £2 a kg =£16000 a year x by 15 years =£240,000.
Thats not a bad return for a part time gig, pay for a new quad, good rifle and kit which would last you the 15 years, still plenty money left to buy Your cases of beer and what ever else you'd like.

Definitely worth doing for less (obviously more money would be better) but it's a numbers game, knock them down, put the graft in, get the reward, those boys earn their dosh.
Good you're happy to give the carcasses away now (basically doing the same selling them to highland game, pay a percentage to a fuel levy and a percentage to the Scottish partnership levy, doesn't leave much in the pot).

I'm aware there are costs, you're still making money though. You certainly aren't making money now a days with game dealers prices which is why I said previously the services provided should be paid for.

Getting a bit over excited with your hourly rates, especially when you currently do it for free?
After initial costs rifle, scope, binoculars, quad, trailer - 15 years ago, the first 2 years would more than cover all that. Bullets were 18 quid a box of 20 (pennies compared to now), fuel was a hell of a lot cheaper also,, maybe your larder costs (electricity) were high, if so can always charge others to use Your facility so it costs you minimum.
Main point I was getting at is there was /is money to be made from shooting deer - IF you're willing to put in the effort and you know what you're doing.
Recently seen a post by a young guy glad of a rest after a busy season of culling 900 deer and skinning and processing them himself, he obviously seen an opening in the market, is a grafter and good at what he does

255 last year alongside my full time job. Be a touch over 4500 deer in my life so far so kind of experienced

I make a profit, but if I were to include my hours spent out deer stalking I would be well below minimum wage.

The same in alot of jobs though that aren't based on an hourly rate, have a good month then think jesus it's not that good for the hours I did but then you remember the pros and perks to the jobs and that's why you do it

i do find it funny that deer stalking should make money but people happily kill rats, rabbits, foxes and pigeons for free and pay to shoot half tame pheasants.

I'd love to start my own Venison business but cost and time are too high and not enough so I'll have to continue giving deer to friends dnd and supplying game dealer for low prices, the only pro is that some land owners now pay for the deer control as they realise the Venison money isn't in it any more
