Recommendations for calibre please. Thinking 16” barrel, bolt action, magazine fed, will be moderated and wear a thermal for part of the year. ie no stutzens.
Deer legal and suitable for unleaded bullets.
Thoughts?

7mm08, beats the 308 every time bar the factory ammo department.

This Rem M7 (not 700!) MCmillan KS 7mm08 16" is very handy... ultimate 0-300m forestry deer rifle IMO.

Under 5kg with 5 rounds in the internal floorplate magazine, DPT moderator, 20MOA mount and Leupold Mk4 3.5-10×40.

Stone dead with lead (Nosler 120 or 140 BT :thumb:), OK with Hornady Superformance 139CX but would not use with other, crapper copper ammo (would want at least 20" and better still Rem Mag!)

Bit hard to reccomend though as you can't just buy them 'off the shelf'!

Like my Steyr Scout in .308, short and handy, good accuracy, great trigger, x5 round mags, + 1 spare in the stock, or keep your loaded mag in the but stock for times you need to unload the rifle - crossing fences, climbing high seats etc. Moderator, Integral bipod great for keeping the rifle out of the mud and dirt when you need both hands, also great for cleaning - not such a great execution for a stable shooting rest.

I've found the 120gr barnes to work very well through my 7mm-08.

Welll under 5kg I imagine, must be much closer to 4 than it is 5!

My rifle is under 5kg (not by lots, but under) and is nowhere near as svelte.

Have you weighed yours?

Always liked the idea of a 7-08, but lack of factory ammo put me off for years.

Has the look of a plastic savage about it
Will be similar weight and no surprise the resemblance as both American

I did for the 'What does your rifle weigh' thread but realised that a target weight is a pretty futile objective.

The true goal should be balance, something that many rifles lack. Heavy mod at the end of a long barrel, massive scope on a light rifle, overly flimsy stock with a Harris or any other bipod slapped on...:banghead::cuckoo:

Classis is where a sling is used muzzle up with a muzzle heavy rifle, which begins to slowly lean back until it is 45-60° away from the shoulder.

Seen some 'pro guides' have the muzzle pointing directly at their 'client's' head due to this rookie mistake!

Bergara B-14 Extreme Sporter Viper Western in 6.5CM. 18 inch barrel from factory, very light and robust. Looks the part too.

What about one of those browning BLR’s? 16” barrel, 6.5lbs can be had in 30-06.

That would surely work!
