Should Fridge in garage work?

Previously had a fridge-freezer in the garage which wouldn't work in the cold (food defrosted). Assumed that meant the whole thing wasn't working, but reading into it more, believe the freezer turns off because of the fridge being at the correct temperature. I'm now getting a full length fridge only, with no freezer that I will use as a game larder, should this work in the cold, or will I need to look into one of those garage kits?

I had a fridge freezer in the outhouse. When the temp was as low as the fridge it shut down. To keep the freezer running I had to put a lead light it the fridge to warm it up. Got separate fridge and freezer now no problems.

I’ve got a full length fridge in my garage that I use for hanging carcasses. It works just fine winter and summer. I bought a battery operated min max digital temperature and humidity gauge that I keep inside the fridge that tells me current readings and either min max over the last 24 hours or since switched on. Very useful in seeing what’s going on temp and humidity wise with the carcass.

You can now buy 2 sorts of deepfreeze, both the same price , but it says for outdoor garage use, or indoor use on checkout, ive bought the
outdoor garage type and no probs at all maybe different sort of thermostat.

Thanks for the replies chaps, seems a big issue is the fridge/freezer combo because a lot of them don't have independent thermostats, so stand alone fridges or freezers are more likely to work better. Will definitely look at some sort of temp/humidity monitor.

If you want a fridge/freezer to go in a cold place, buy one designed for the purpose, for peace of mind.

I have a solution you might laugh bit try this throw a blanket aka bed quilt over it and leave it and I bet it will work. You get ones that are deigned for sheds etc

I did the same as the above comment I put a lagging jacket you'd get for an immersion tank over the fridge body and another piece of it stuck to the door of the fridge and it didn't shut down.

Had the same problem some years ago and learnt if you want it to work “outside/ not under “household temperatures” you should buy a -13 freezer and that cured my problems

It’s nothing to do with fridge/freezer combination. I haven’t had a fridge problem when I use a separate fridge but had a new freezer shut down. Chest freezers are designed to be outdoors I believe and, as said, uprights that are designed for it. I have a detached garage and run chest freezers and an upright fridge (the latter is only on when I have a deer in it) with no problems.

It all depends on the type of thermostat they are fitted with. It has nothing to do as someone said earlier they need a certain amount of heat to work like a heat pump. A friend had one that went of in cold weather, he lives over 120 mls from me so I got him to insulate the capillary tube where it wasn't inside the fridge compartment.
It now works perfectly.
