Shultz & Larsen Victory vs custom with an FN Mauser Action

You can a beautiful rifle for less than the price of a new budget rifle and scope.

Such a rifle built today would be £5,000 at least just for the core components and basic machine work.
Indeed. 👍 And yes, it might not have a picatinny rail, allowing for the mouting of all the new stuff, but then again how much of those things does the (skilfull) or skillbuilding average non professional stalker really need?

I know the TS was mainly considering FN Mausers and S and Ls but what heym just wrote above can also be examplied if one searches for Mannlicher Schoenauers, both stutzens and half stocks.
There are some absolutely beautiful, and beautifully crafted ones out there for not that much money. Especially not vs their build quality and beauty and they even come in some very useful chamberings too.
Then yes it is true that one might have to be content with using glass scope in 1 inch tubes, but if the glass is clear and good how much more scope does one really need ? At least in most of our cases .

I have the rifle above and it is wonderful.

It is heavy but the accuracy makes up for it.

As it has a jewel trigger, the trigger pull is very crisp and light.

I have 3 S & L rifles in 6.5x55, 300 Win Mag and lastly 375 Ruger. Great rifles but the trigger does not even begin to compare to a Jewel trigger!

The 300 Win Mag now wears a S & L synthetic thumbhole stock. The most important thing to mention about the stock is the recoil management compared to the wooden stock which is now a fraction of what it was even without a kickstop.

Currently, all 3 S & L rifles are with Steve Kershaw to see if he can improve the trigger.

Well I hope it serves you as well as it did for Peter

A great deal of care and time went into its creation by all involved

I did like it I have to say, but I’m not big on the .308 for classic rifles. Good chambering of the 30 cal, just doesn’t belong on a classic rifle in my troglodyte world 😂
irc the story was Lord Cavendish chose 308 as he was concerned about availability. in the 70’s!!
he gave it to his then SIL along with a box lock -barrels by Purdy that was a similar scale. the SIL left them in storage for almost 20 years before they were evicted and stored at Tim’s. when he hung up his spurs they moved to Ed’s fine emporium.

Thanks all - I love that TT Proctor - but am currently waiting for the 7x57 and another .308 slot to come back on the ticket. It is unlikely I go through the admin again anytime soon.
This is the first I have heard anything negative said about the S&L trigger - have any of you having issue with it tried their 2 stage match trigger they sell?

I was going to buy one and try, but I can only get it through Alan Rhone, who refused to send it unless they have fitted it. Which, either way all fuel and RFD and fitting charges, would be sailing close to £500. 😂

Emailed SL directly who said they only ship / sell to their distributors, and the 2 stage is likely to show similar characteristics to the 1 stage. So I left it as 1 stage and just live with it being a bit shjite compared to my tikka

Triggers are a very personal thing, each one takes getting used to, and once you are used to one, most others are shite.

A lot also depends on your preferred pull weight. If you only ever shoot very light target triggers then everything else is impossibly heavy. If you only ever shoot two stage, then a single stage takes you by surprise, conversely a two stage is a long draggy thing if you used to a crisp single stage. And if you have only ever shot a No 4 or SLR then everything is a lot lighter and crisper.

Exactly, between @Selous and me we have picked up three DG calibre TT Proctors in the last few years for around £2k, lovely rifles

I know of someone (not on this site) who lives near me selling a TT Proctor in 7x57. If of interest drop me PM and I can put you in touch

Two different options.

The S&L is a factory rifle, it will retain value better than a custom rifle.

A custom rifle, huge choice but a money pit.

That Parker Hale Rigby is very tempting and an African trip with the change?
