Sika stags in velvet

Hi All,

Went for a walk this afternoon with Casca (BMH pup) and saw these stags grazing.

Unfortunatley we were spotted just too soon. First time Casca had seen Sika this close (30 yards).

There are some nice beasties there Michelle, medal prospects I would not be surprised. Well done with the pics you froze the action nicely.

Hi Stalkerboyby
You cant see off the photos to well but the velvet is browny red and they are Manchuraian,
We have pockets of stags in the valley but numbers are down.

Michelle,

Out of interest what Lens are you using on your camera, the last photo even at 30 yards is fantastic and must have required quite a lot of zoom...

The reason I ask is I have started taking more and more pictures whilst stalking and would love to be able to get a bit more detail from my pictures of live deer rather than just the dead one's so thinking of getting a longer lens...

I have a Cannon 30D and had on a 75-300mm lens, was shot in P mode with high speed burst and on Ai servo mode.

The last picture was zoomed in on on comp (by Smithp18) by about 25%.

I am new to it and it is all trial and error, have so many that are not just right but thats how it go's.

Just struck lucky the other day, could perhaps of got nearer had I been prepared to crawl through a meadow with knee high wet grass!

Thanks for all your comments

Michelle :)
