Simple pocket sized carry strap for roe

I use a piece of webbing that is long enough to go twice around my waist (36"), and sewed my fathers old SD belt buckle on to it. I've carried some fairly large Reds with it (the Sika in the photo might have gone 50kg at a stretch), and as the neck and bum are off to either side you don't get blood on you like you do with the old backpack style of carry.

Of course, we don't have the tick problem you do in the UK, but there is no way you could drag a deer out of anywhere I hunt.2017 077-K600.webp

I had a thing like that for years… then I got tired of getting blood on my trousers and more importantly older and perhaps wiser? Now I drag my deer with the same shoulder patch but a short length of rope through the ankles of the deer. Much easier on the back and shoulders.
Definitely room for me to grow wiser! I think the dragging vs carrying thing depends a lot on the type of ground. Some of my ground is Rhôs pasture which is not good for dragging deer over/through. Carrying is the easier option there.
With recurring lower back issues my best (wiser!) option is to have a friend to carry deer with/for me but I’m often on my own so this shoulder strap is what I’ve found works well for me on those odd occasions.

Nice solution!

If you’re dragging large deer you could do a lot worse than buy one of the drag bags sold at A1 Decoys. They’re made out of the same vinyl type material as HGV tauntliners. You tie the carcass in through the eyelet loops so it doesn’t fall out then drag/pull it by the reinforced carry handles. Everything is kept out of the dirt and free from contamination and can be hosed out later.

Nice idea. Fine and light For my part though, I like to do as much as possible to keep keds and ticks off me. I know most deer ticks are pretty well-dug in to their host, but I take no chances with them as I hate the bloody things with a vengeance!
I should think that you're more likely to pick up a questing tick from vegetation than have one transfer itself from a deer to you.
Keds are a different story...

I've had juveniles drop off in the roesack on dozens of occasions. I don't take any chances with them. I even tend to pick off a lot of embedded ticks as part of the gralloch too. I hate the bloody things

Only once in my life have I ever had a tick on me (after a long crawl through heather stalking wild goats in Snowdonia). This is despite having spent most of my time handling tick infested sheep on tick infested pastures, and having carried quite a few tick infested deer. I reckon they just don't like the taste of me.

These work well, short section of belt around wherever you like and cord and carabiner to the animal, you can link 2 or more together for help with the bigger stuff and it fits in a pocket.

Bruce Potts did an article on this type of sling years ago. I used to use a american call carrying strap. Now made my own using a ex army gas mask carrying strap and some old boot laces. Pain is carrying a buck as the antlers dig in your calves so extra bit of para cord to secure the head out of the way. Permanently lives in a pocket of my cammo jacket.

Good idea about the extra length of cord for the head! 👌

I like that idea Woodsy, like you the thought of keds/deer on me, I try to limit as much as possible, especially in relation to Lyme disease, blood not bothered about.
This fits in my pocket and I have dragged fallow does with itIMG_20221106_074511649_HDR.webp

Great idea, I use an IKEA bag. It has both a shoulder and a leg strap and keeps the blood contained.

P.s. I won't go near that hateful place after my one and only visit years ago but I bought a pack of 10 new IKEA bags on eBay a few years ago and rotate them, sticking them in the washing machine with my Stalking gear.
