“Global services slowly recovering after bug causes IT chaos”.
This world-wide event prompted the sainted Lady FB to remind me of a conversation we once had with some lads in a very rural Pennsylvanian gun-store. Apart from the great interest from both parties in the widely differing gun controls much of the conversation centred on their common belief that society was “on the edge of collapse” and that only those with he means to survive (i.e. gun owners) would, with proper planning survive. They spoke with some conviction of something called a “pulse“ probably man-made which would in effect shut down all electrical systems across the globe which would then quickly bring society into chaos. They all had stores of 3-6 months supplies which were regularly replenished. Nah says yer man! It will never happen- too far-fetched for me but respect for very interesting educated guys (not Deliverance Hillbillies) and all with a common perspective which was very interesting to hear.
Wind forward perhaps 10 years and we have this event; paradoxically caused by an outfit in the business of preventing such an occurrence…
Not exactly the armageddon-like “pulse” my US pals feared but an indication perhaps of how, even unintentionally, significant damage can be sustained across the world - in this case by a reported simple “coding error”. I suspect many of the guys in the US and a helluva lot of others now see vindication of their views and countermeasures. I can’t help but wonder how many more of these would it take to bring their fears to fruition…..

I'm not sure what it was like near you @Foxyboy43 during covid, but at the very hint of danger, people lost their minds and civility went out of the window. Supermarkets were being emptied, people panicking, all sorts.

It doesn't take much for 'normies' to have their bubble burst. A lot of people live in the comfort of the thin veil of civilsation that is only a few core services and meals away from anarchy.

Some preppers are batsh*t crazy (or are they?) But being aware of social fragility, making provisions, having certain essentials stocked is sensible.

I'm not paranoid, but I like to be aware, I look both ways when crossing a one-way street because people are idiots, rarely sit with my back to the door in a public place, always aware of exits in big venues, take note of landmarks when in unfamiliar locations.

I remember watching something a while back where they were saying that if a nation were to drop a nuke, it's 'better' to detonate it at high altitude above the location, not at ground level. The EMP blast from the weapon knocks out all the unprotected electronics, which is more effective than ground level detonated damage.

The global outage demonstrates how foolish it is to place all your eggs in one (microsoft) basket, and why billy boy gates has so much influence and power. MS office and teams is used by all our courts, transport, education, travel, finance institutions etc etc and we can all be held to ransom at any time - either by hackers, or those operating the levers. Event 201 was a dry run for Covid. Cyber Polygon was a dry run for the planned internet shutdown....

i initially thought a cyber attack from Russia, Korea or China but simply a screwed up antivirus update could do that....

imagine what a purposely designed full on cyber attack could do ......

society nearly went t1ts up here.... i went into local Greggs ...small town we have a "Greggs" ooooohh! and disaster !!! the local jakeys were up in arms because 1x till in the place wouldn't accept cash and the remaining till wouldn't accept cards & the youngsters behind said tills didn't have sense to line folk up at each till according to how they would pay ...as a species we are doomed anyway ...but joking aside i guess these full on preppers have at least some semblance of what may come

didn't someone write something along lines of "we are only half a dozen meals from chaos" or summit similar ?

ive got a small genny ( only good if you have fuel)
small stash (not months) of rice / pasta ... so if another beast form the east type deal few days worth

how far do you go ?... wee bit of the "prepper" in many of us i guess

Events… there’s little new under the Sun…

The present 11-year solar cycle is due to peak fairly shortly, the sixth of an eight solar cycle sequence in what is known as the Gleissberg cycle, where the last three (6, 7 & 8) are seen to be the strongest within the whole sequence. There may be more than just pretty Aurora to consider.

true .... as a radio ham as well.....the latest cycle and batch of flares all but wipes out HF radio for day or so then on back of it the VHF goes crazy and get a bit of lift and your speaking to folk in europe that's normally a " line of sight" affair!
that last cracking batch of Northern lights coincided with a big flare and next day linn of dee none of the card meters for car parking worked etc for a day or so ... folk have no idea how easy they can be effected

Few weeks back decided to treat swmbo to Sunday lunch like you do, into the local hotel chain / restaurant into the queue
Gets to the till, go to order lunch and sweet and pay - computer says no - we can’t take card payment, ok I’ll get some cash out, nope sorry can’t take cash, why not. We can’t generate an order slip to the kitchen. ?????
I chipped in don’t worry round it up I’ll pay you cash write it down and I’ll take it to the kitchen to save you doing it 😀

Ever had the feeling you over stepped the mark by the stare you get from the staff 😵‍💫. Hasty retreat and a note to oneself not to darken their door ever again

The staff couldn’t have cared two hoots about service, customers I got the distinct impression they just took the opportunity to shut the place down as much as possible unless you had cash in the right amount for drinks

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 multiply just that minuscule event x worldwide we are in the s#%@e up to our neck whole world is a collapsible tech junkie

Not exactly the armageddon-like “pulse”

We have had a pulse with covid, look what that did to the world.

Only madmen will use nukes for an Armageddon ..we need collectively to rid the world of madmen.

The folding stuff and coins will be worth 'Jack Schitt' if it happens...the "money value " will be in preppers goods.

Sell ya missus for a carton of baked beans etc

Most semiconductors are rather more fragile/vulnerable to a spike in energy than the old telegraph systems devised at our earlier times using electricity. So, it’ll only be the things that have a chip inside that are most likely to stop working. Your average penknife and Nikko Stirling should be fine…

I can just see those preppers with their digital Chargemasters and automatic tricklers crying into their powder pots, wishing they'd held onto to their 'prehistoric' beam scales, just as the baying mob of looters are hammering on their doors, and they have no loaded ammo left.
