An American television station learnt the hard way about rushing information too quickly to air. San Francisco’s KTVU thought it had a scoop on Friday: the names of the crew of the South Korean plane that crashed at the city’s airport last weekend, killing three people.

In sombre tones, a newsreader listed the four men: “Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, Bang Ting Ow.” In a magnificently embarrassing apology broadcast shortly after the howler, the station admitted that “we never read them out loud” before putting the names on air.

It had, however, checked with the National Transportation Safety Board, which had confirmed that the information was accurate.

In its own apology, the latter explained: “A summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority.”
