Swallowed Battery

Now this did not happen..

But it cost me £170 to find out.

Whilst my Mrs was in the shower this morning my young WHV chewed up the TV remote. (Little xxxx he is).

Anyway subsequently she could only find one of the two batteries from the remote. We concluded a call to the vet was required. Although a .22 bullet is far far cheaper….

Anyways vet said bring him in asap for an X-ray. Thankfully all clear, pup enjoyed cuddles and biscuits from the staff (I never get them and I’m the one who pays!)

So what if he had swallowed a battery? Any consequences and what would have happened if they had discovered one in his stomach/ intestine?

Missing Battery was found later inside the mechanism of the sofa.

Hmm. I share your pain.
Two weeks ago I foolishly gave our two year old lab an antler chew which an elderly neighbour had bought for her. Five minutes later it had gone - swallowed in one so a 7am call to the emergency vet and straight down to the practice. A dose of something or other fairly toxic and up it came - thank God. Who knows what would have happened if four inches of antler had gone any further? Best £75 I ever spent and a lesson well learned…

Mine chewed up one of my hearing aids, couldn't find the battery so off to the vets. Didn't find the battery, the dog got treats, I got fleeced, then NHS billed me for a new
hearing aid. The only good bit was I couldn't hear the tills ringing.

I had a lab that ate a dozen nightlight candles (trip to the vets to induce vomiting) and gorged on wheat (trip to the vets for a enema). There were plenty of other incidents that didn't require treatment, otherwise I'd have been bankrupt.

My BT had a spell of "experimentation" starting with 2 tubs of fish food, then a tube of craft glitter glue and AA/AAA batteries were chewed up. His piece de resistance was finding the wifes easter egg stash and eating all the chocolate and some of the silver foil wrapping. He was not popular for a while......the vets were not involved and he lived to 14 1/2 💕 miss that dog.

Then there was our heavily pregnant lab Susie who managed to consume 32 eggs from a very near full tray. Do you know how many places yellow bubbles can come from in a labrador children?
Foxyboy does and you would be surprised for just how long…..

£170, think yourself lucky mate, my dog just cost me £6275 at the vets to find out what was wrong with him, not what they expected, but still died a week later,
Hold the phone! What did the vet do for essentially £10k of your pre tax earnings?

If you Google "swallowed battery damage" you can see plenty of images of the type of injuries it can cause and how quickly. It's mainly aimed at parents of young kids but the same would apply to a dog no doubt.

short story is, 8 year old fit and health lad had a limp one day, 2 days later couldnt get up, took him to local vets and they were a bit stumped so kept him in over night, next day they said he seems paralysed from the neck down, and had to go to a bigger vets a in wakefield, they had a look and said yes hes paralysed, they thought is might be a cancer tumour on the brain or meningitis, only way to find out was a scan that would cost between £4000-£6000 depending on after treatment, turns out it was a prolapsed disc, not in a good place to operate on, could work, might not, opp may kill him, may or may not get better on his own, stayed there for 3 nights in the ICU unit, took him home after 3 night as i knew he'd be happier there, they said if hes not better in a week then a decision would have to be made, he did get a bit of movement back but no where near enough, a week later he died in the night, vets bill was £6275,

My dog swallowed a condom the other night.
I rang the vet in a bit of a panic ...he told me it should pass through the dog's system ok , but said he would ring me in the morning to make sure everything was ok.
He rang me at about 9:30 am and asked how the dog was...
I was able to tell him that the dog was quite happy.

He said , What about the condom?

Oh , I said we managed to find another one in the draw.

You’re a good dog owner to cough up that amount! Few would/could!
