Swarovski, S&B or Kahles

Sorry I cannot "understand" the need for a 30mm tubed scope. Yes I have a couple of them, the first came already fitted to a rifle, it's a Tasco Titan 3-9x42. The second I brought off e-bay and it's another tasco Titan but the second type with the German reticle. IMHO it's not as well made as the first early type of Titan ............................... yep they did it again cheapened it whilst keeping the cost up :banghead:. The last is a Falcon menace CSS brought to try out the Mildot reticle and see what all the fuss is about. Result is that I cannot what all the furore is about and find it's just cluttered. Also found out that falcon's warranty is worthless  seems some of the inner coating of the tube has flaked and has been attracted tot eh glass etched reticle. Contacted them and they say as they don't offer that particular scope not all they can do is "make an allowance" against a new scope. The allowance is a pittance . Seems they buy up end of run bits for other makers and when they run out it's the next model so no back up at all on their scopes despite the claims.

On a limited budget does it not make more sense to stay with 1" so ones mounts can be utilised?

So exactly why does everyone suddenly need 30mm scope tubes?

Originally the larger tubed was adopted to allow more adjustment and in the Military usage more strength. makers jumped on the band wagon and lots of scopes appeared wiht the wonderous 30mm tubes but the same internal adjustment as the 1" versions but of course at a higher price ............................... so where is the gain?

Kevin , you have answered your own question........
We the thinking shooters don't need the bigger tube, but the sheep buy them in quantity so now the makers make only them.
Personally I don't really care for them, to me it is just a more comfortable handle with which to carry a rifle.
But I/we don't get the choice if I/we want a decent scope of that magnification.

by the way thank you for a cracking phone, all data transferred (by the oldest girl Shannon) and my old phone on its way to its new owner.

ps: 308 is away to get threaded, not sure if ill get it 1/22 unf Neil as the barrel is a tad thinner than id like, as the shoulder would be a bit short.

ill give you a shout later to see how you got on,

sun's out and im sat on your old phone on the forum (now i have my new glasses on :) and can see the bigger screen.

Now zeroed, well near enough for now, and a record for me, 3 shots and job done, followed by 3 to make sure.
Nothing much about to shoot, well nothing at all really, but a pigeon made a fatal mistake, straight through the neck at 90 yards.
I took the Swarovski and the S&B with me, at last light the S&B gave up first, then the new Zeiss set at 10X, when the 6x42 Swarovski
gave up the Zeiss wound down to 6x gave me a few more minutes, and at 4x it carried on till I gave up at 6.40, but even then I was watching a
Pheasant scrathcing about at 100 yards.
All in all, well pleased with the new scope, now all I need is to find a rangefinder that will work in such low light, or rather one that has an LED display.
Never ends does it ??

Neil. :)
