So I'm babysitting my 8year old granddaughter who hates loud noises.
She loves and trusts her grandad because he is fun 😊.

I showed her my electronic headphones and she liked them so we set off to test some 22 ammo on a farm.
The test was CCI segmented subs, Winchester subs in the new smaller box and Federal HV solids..
10rds each at 60 big strides.
Wind variable gusting left to right.IMG_20230603_155153.webp
Nothing fancy but it looks like the Winchester were the best! Apart from four just sailing over the top.
The federal were a disappointment as were the CCI because This rifle does ok with other CCI offerings.

But all that paled into insignificance because I encouraged my granddaughter to have ago and she did but first came the safety drill. Fingers away from trigger until safe to shoot. All her life she has seen me handling firearms and we always check together firearm status and check they are not loaded, a real switched on kid 👍🏻

We put a rock up in the berm and got her on it, her first shot hit it plumb centre!!
70 rounds later I managed to get my rifle back! She had a blast and at nearly 8 years old she has excellent eye and hand coordination.
Her mother is also an excellent shot 🤗.
She then drove the car off the farm.
We had a blast 😊.

All good stuff, but sadly illegal in the UK.
Great to see a child getting into shooting at such a young age, but probably best not posted on an open forum.

To late. I'll look into it and make the necessary changes. Possibly airgun only now on. 👍🏻

It's a shame, isn't it? Young talent should be encouraged in a safe environment, and it's only natural that those of us who shoot want to pass on skills to youngsters when opportunities like this crop up.
Just read the guidance, my mistake but what a shame. Innocence lost....
Looks like I've got to get a BB gun.

Nah! Clearly a fat thumbs typo and great that you posted the 28 yrs old lady shooter’s daughter holding the stone etc….
My friend did this many years ago with his 6 years old grandson who being slightly autistic hates loud noises.
Turns out he wasn’t that bothered by 9mm pistol shots - apparently…..

It’s all madness, I have a young lad that’s been coming out with me since he was 3, knows all the safety, how to handle a rifle, what calibre for what task, understands back stops and safe shooting, but at 8 year old he’s apparently not allowed to shoot a rifle in a safe and controlled environment, I’ve been out with people who have an FAC with less knowledge than this little chap

It is a bit odd in my eyes. Nothing in law stops you mentoring a youngster using your section 2 under supervision, likewise you could take a friend over 18 out under supervision to use your section 1 firearm not knowing if they are a prohibited person, yet your own flesh and blood wh who know the full history of you can't.

Without sounding like a complete novice if his granddaughter was 18 this would be legal correct
It’s on land he has permission to shoot on
And he has a license so long as she is next to him all good ?

Exactly this.
On a point of detail whilst it may not be legal in some parts of the UK it is entirely legal in other parts of the UK. The nonsense of firearms licensing disparities including minimum ages across the UK was covered in a recent thread - if anyone cares to look for it.

Can I have the link please

It was an oversight on my part. Since checking the law I am obligated to make changes. I'll have to explain it to my Granddaughter.
I am sure we will be fine with an air rifle and a stack of tin cans.
I hope this thread can become a positive reference for genuine folk in a similar situation.
I'm sure I can continue to encourage her.

My low opinion of firearms law in the UK does not change the fact that in a sense I am contractually obligated to the law.
Over and out.
