The dogs whiskers?

When grooming a dog is it okay to trim the whiskers?
I have heard conflicting comments about this with some saying whiskers are essential to a dogs well being others saying it has no effect on them at all.
Any experiences of this out there?

Mine do that too!
It's a pain when they get stuck between your teeth so you can't open your mouth properly.

If they are getting in the mouth, no harm to trim the tips.

The trimming? - it might feel really unpleasant for them so use sharp scissors so as not to tug.
