This is the part that gets me.. 40 Grand USD for a YBD......

Ernie Dosio, 75, described by loved ones as a “good old country boy” who loved the outdoors, was on a $40,000 chase for a yellow-backed duiker (a type of antelope) with a professional guide in the thick Gabonese rainforest last Friday when they became the hunted.

I noticed that!! Anyone willing to take me on a muntjac hunt… costs up to $40k seem reasonable but not a penny more!! Sad that he lost his life though

$40k would have been for a multi-quarry bag I would have thought. Probably also included all transfers and accommodations and food etc.
  • seems you get one only
  • Expedition Costs: Total hunt packages for this specific species can range from $10,000 to over $40,000 USD [4, 6]. These costs typically include daily outfitter rates, professional guide services, and licenses. For example, a specialized chase for a yellow-backed duiker in Gabon has been cited at around $40,000 USD [6].

Crikey. Must be an elusive or rare quarry, and in a more tricky area and environment (rainforest) than standard plains game? Certainly more dangerous perhaps, as they sadly found out.

I remember reading in old book about big game hunting in Africa, an account of a chap who followed an injured elephant into some mopani scrub. The elephant found him first ....

It not only killed him PDQ, it then pounded him into the ground ( I believe they do this by kneeling on you) to the point where his assistants (gun-bearer and tracker) we unable to pick anything up to return to his widow.
They had a funeral for the man ... where they buried his hat.

Do NOT mess with elephants !

Either way works for me.
When your hunting game in a predator and large game environment your just joining the menu. Some you win and some you loose.

No sympathy for him and I’d expect he’d be happy with that.

Life is a gamble, some odds better than others. I hope he enjoyed the trip (up to the very last bit) 👍
