THE PRETEND KEEPER

Yes I do have a caller, like Nick's.

For crows make the sound in your throat instead of just blowing 👍
I do try ...I promise...but after years its still a shocking attempt at times whereas I can hit the right notes with the jackdaws. To be fair it saves me money as less birds = less cartridges :)

It was absolutely wild up at the shoot today, it did give me the opportunity to see what bird numbers were like as they were all in or around the pens and I was happy with what I seen, so fingers crossed they continue to grow over the next 4 weeks and start to fill more of the drives
Before I left I had a tree come down across the drive blocking the way out. So I had that to clear for the old girl before I left IMG_3292.webp

What’s people’s thoughts on this, my shoot captain sent it out ( didn’t tell me) I’m not sure if I’m in favour of it, we have sold a few days in the past but they were just cover a bit of extra feed, where as this would bring in another £1800 and I don’t know if people will expect more for their 150 quid, when it’s only really a hobby shootIMG_3298.webp

Re selling a peg or a whole day - once money has changed hands you've committed to providing a day of sport for others. If you tell them a certain number of birds will be shot, they will hold you to it. Likewise catering, always state what they're getting and honour that. Some people will go with the flow, other people will be so pedantic you'll grind your teeth behind your smile 🤣
If you consistently hit a number in the bag then tell them what to expect going on past experience, you'll be able to fulfill their expectations. Always make sure they know what you expect from them IE some people really get stuck in so they'll reach the bag by 11's! Asking them to stop shooting really don't go down well 🤣
The above being said, I go on quite a few farm shoots with part time keepers and they really are a good day, well run and brilliant craic.
Beware the gun who wants to pay beer money and have a champagne day 😡
Wishing you all the best for the season bud.

We always have guests and I’m fine with that, no expectations, just a good day out, what concerns me about this is it’s for any Tom, Dick or Harriet and it only takes one to spoil a day for everyone else, if you bring a guest, you are responsible for them if some random is paying for a day and acts the fool it will be me who has to sort it out, I would suggest that these days should be offered only to people who are known to the shoot or who are on the list to join

Don't worry stav. It's the whole day not just the shooting. It wasn't your decision if it doesn't go as expected bird wise. In a way you were protected not being asked.
Dunner get winding the sen up now!

Very true. Had one 3 seasons ago I pulled out of line was not safe.
Told the gun who invited him never to bring him back.
Had 2 last year that were together. Pillowcasing birds. Again will never be shooting there again

I’ve got no problem with people coming as a guest of a member, I take people who haven’t been there before or sometimes haven’t shot before, I’ve got 2/3 days this season free that I’ll just end up giving away, but I’m responsible for them and I’ve got no problem telling them to put their gun away or even leave and if they have a problem with that I also don’t have a problem removing teeth from their head
I’ve had bad experiences with some people who have bought single days with us, I’ve had one who turned up head to toe in brand new gear, I thought he’s going to be bother, and I was right, he shot at everything, some of the birds he was shooting at were way too low, I don’t see what people get from that, that’s just shooting because you want to kill something, I made him put his gun away for the last two drives, I had another shoot down the line on the second drive, he was told to leave, even asked for his money back 🙄😂, the problem is when you sell single days every now and then you get a crank that doesn’t respect or appreciate what they are getting for what is, not a lot of money and they can spoil the day for everyone else, the shoot doesn’t need £1800 quid so I’d of done what we’ve done in the past and offer it to the members friends and family to come for around £70 and it’s stand on beat one, same as the members.

That's the problem Stav with some pheasant shooters they dont get out all year and are desperate to shoot something.

No place for unsafe guns and I would send them packing too 👍

I can understand a bit of over excitement when you don’t get out much and if you shoot a low one you will get a bit of ribbing for it and told not to do it again ( as you know I’ve got a couple of members that get carried away now and then ) but every now and then you get one who just thinks “ I’m going to fill my boots here “ so they can tell their Facebook friends they shot 25 birds, zero tolerance to unsafe shooting, I know we have what I think is good firearms law in this country but they really will give a shotgun to anyone with very little vetting
