Hi
What is the best based everyone is using? We have some new ground above Inverness for this season so looking to invest in a base lay set for those hard days.

Patagonia capilen is one of best for the size of it . Very thin but works.. I've got an oex merino one which is brilliant too but if its that cold il put the softie on

Merino base layers from Icebreaker or Smartwool. Take your pick. Icebreaker do a 260 gr/m2 heavy weight If it’s really cold. Having said that I picked up a 400 gr/m2 top from Woolpower of Ostersund, Sweden. It is seriously warm ! A 200 yd hoik one cold morning to a high seat had me in a lather.

Woolpower is good, but seems more like a standard jumper than a base layer, and is the itchiest of the ones I’ve tried.

Icebreaker are great - the best of the domestically available brands.

Smart wool seems to have a bit more acrylic in it and I sweat more than in the others (and smell).

My personal favourite is Firstlite, from the US. Really outstanding and perfectly designed for heavy use. However, they don’t deliver to the UK - you need to get it sent to a contact in the US and get them to post on.

Merino without a doubt but expensive. I have both Icebreaker and Aldi. Keep your eye on Aldi, they sometimes get them in stock and they're very nearly as good as the Icebreaker.
I think I paid £25 for the Aldi ones. £60 for Icebreaker!
