How difficult is it to get the necessary license for one of these? It's certainly something I would have a use for, but so infrequently I don't know if it would be worth jumping through hoops.

Like a firearm you need to prove justified use
I dart for a deer farm but firearms licence dept have passed work my way cows ect
It’s funny really the gun doesn’t need a licence really it’s the darts that are section 5
Foxy boy depends on what you put in the dart I mainly use nerfasin family of drugs if you get the dose right
Animals stay awake but can’t move
Excellent! Does the inability to move include her the tongue?

now labour is it think you are going this have to rename this listing , ho no its ok its my dyslexia there isn't an S after the N :-|

I looked after a deer farm just said my feo that’s a picture of the stags in the field
Tell me how I work on them if injured catch them or inject them he took one look and said health and safety
You need one as it is not safe to work on them not sedated
I have also done escaped cows. Wild horses on the moors for rspca as well
Just put a strong case together and quote health and safety at work

Speak to Mike at JelenPWS, I did a Live Animal Capture course with him. Put a good case forward to Sussex Police and they granted me a dart gun on my ticket.
I do have the added advantage that I have cattle that I manage on large areas of open access ground, and have conditions on my FAC to be able to use it elsewhere; and have the backing and support from a local farm vet.
Bare in mind that if you are not a qualified vet, you will have to work very closely with a vet to prescribe the sedatives and reversal drugs.

Absolutely impossible
No, not at all. Just need ‘good reason’ just like any other firearm. I appreciate that it is getting more difficult for non-Vets to be granted tranquilliser rifles, mainly due to some Vets actively pushing against it for their own reasons, but the fact remains that plenty of people, myself included, hold and use them.

I was told by Glos Firearms Team that I would not be granted authorisation for a dart gun on the basis that I didn't have the necessary veterinary qualifications to administer sedation to an animal / calculate the correct dose. Or store the sedatives securely. I could demonstrate a "good reason" (this was not in dispute) and the fact that permission had previously been granted to someone who had no veterinary training - indeed it was his tranquilliser gun that I was applying to hold. I can understand the thinking behind this decision but I also think it's a good example of where we need "rules" rather than "guidelines" if we want to avoid regional variations in practice based on the personal views of individual firearms officers.

I would go back and challenge this. Remote injection equipment has many uses, not just anaesthesia. You do not need to be a vet to purchase, calculate dose and dart an animal with…. Vitamins. And yes…. I frequently dart big grumpy animals with vitamins and minerals

Fair point but in this particular instance the primary purpose of darts / gun would have been to sedate injured or aggressive cattle (which graze on large areas of common land and are forever being hit by vehicles). I am a member of the local HAD team and thought it would be a good idea (as did the graziers representatives) if we had a non-lethal option. I understand the concerns of the police around the safe storage of powerful drugs but (given that I am trusted to safely store lots of other dangerous things... like guns and ammunition for instance!) I also think it should have been possible to find a way around this. Not the end of world though!
