Looks a long way off the floor from the photos. What height up is it?

Bark stripping, ancient and new, the answer is below ground (trace element deficiencies), not necessarily by the red deer, though.

The older damage I don't know, but the fresh damage looks to be sheep stripping the bark to me as there are clear teeth mark.

This is sheep damage on a willow tree and a hazel bush as a comparison.

It’s new Galloway area
Not seen any goats in the area definitely no sika
20% of the damage is old the rest is recent
Damage is on average 1 mtr from the ground although one Is 1.7 metres from the ground

You think there are no Sika there!! It would really surprise you then to know I handled a hybrid from within a few miles of there 25 years ago. It was a mature stag that had been holding Red hinds. Sika antlers, Red head, Sika body and white hock glands. There have been Sika in Galloway for years, all you need is a West wind and hinds in season, 20 miles is nothing to a randy little black stag. There were also some Sika the other side of Newton Stewart.

Never seen any sika in the area or surrounding areas and I’ve managed the estate for 28 years now
I do manage a estate that is predominantly sika in Inverness though
Forester is sure it’s red and want all shot on site and lamped as well but I don’t think it is and there are only about 10 hinds on there as the fc around us kill everything on site

No horses on the land
The width of the teeth marks look to wide for deer and the marks are more downward deer are usually upwards with the lower teeth

At that height (if no sika) it could be red or sheep. Mend the fence...if it continues it's red!

Less sika and hybrids than there was in the area Brock as the FLS have had a real purge on them over the past 20 years or so. However the DNA study from 3 years ago says 'too little too late..'

The only thing is that in my time the FC called everything in D&G either Red or Roe with the odd Fallow. They were killing Sika then and Hybrids in the area, if you knew the Rangers well. You and I know that a purge doesn't work with Sika and as you say too little too late. When you talked to people like the late Ronnie Rose and he tells you a Sika stag lived in a 50 acre forest block without leaving it, it tells you that these animals can be there in numbers without you seeing them.
I had a block in the Border hills, in Eight years I saw one Sika hind, shot two Sika stags and one hybrid, and I lived 100 yards from the forest. Now some 12 years later it's heaving with Sika as is the length of the Tweed valley, Southern Lanarkshire and D&G. If one can shoot a hybrid stag with Red hinds 20 years ago at Wanlockhead, Sika had been out in Red country for some time. My case rests.🤗 No more to say.
